htm & mp3 file associations change since latest update version “1511”

    I recently upgraded/updated Windows 10 Home with the Nov/Dec 2015 update version “1511”.

File associations for Web Browser and Music have always been Firefox and VLC
Player respectively, i.e. .htm files open in Firefox and .mp3 files open in VLC.

However, since the update version “1511”, every time I zip an mp3 file with WinZip, the file associations for Web Browser get removed and local .htm web pages get associated with Microsoft Edge, and mp3 files get associated with Groove. I then have to manually reset files back to Firefox and VLC through Settings / System / Default Apps and/or use Open With / always use this app to open this type of file.

Similarly, if I zip an .htm file with Winzip, then .htm files get changed from being associated with Firefox and become associated with Microsoft Edge [but mp3 files do not lose their association with VLC in this instance].

This behaviour did not occur before the major update version “1511”.

Is anyone aware of what is happening here? Thanks.

    :)

File Associations Keep Reverting to Windows 10 Defaults

I've posted to another thread, but that thread isn't getting any traction or responses.

Latest WIndows 10 Update Changes File Associations

The most maddening thing is happening on my Windows 10 PC. I've reset the file associations via every way possible and still the file associations for Edge keep coming back, sometimes even minutes after
I've changed it. In particular with these file types and associations:

    • graphic files like png, jpg, gif - I have resurrected Window Photo Viewer and associated these file types with it, but Windows 10 keeps changing them back to the Photos app
    • mp3 files - I changed them to Windows Media Player, but Windows 10 keeps changing them back to Groove Music
    • htm and html files - I changed to open with Chrome, but Windows 10 keeps changing them back to open with Edge
    • pdf files - I changed to open with Acrobat Pro, but Windows 10 keeps changing them back to open with Edge

    Help please!

MP3 Files No Longer Playing after 1511 Upgrade

After upgrading to the latest Windows 10 update - version 1511 - Windows Media Player and Groove Music no longer recognize any of the MP3 music files on my computer. Both programs give error messages about this file type "not being supported", which is extremely
odd since I've always used Media Player to play music and this is the first time I've had a problem. Other third-party music apps, like MediaMonkey, still work without incident, so it's just the Microsoft players that are not working.

Was there a codec change or something that affected Microsoft media apps in 1511? Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I would say do not use WinZip. There are other options.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

This behaviour does seem to be something that WinZip is doing as it does not happen with Explorer's zipping [I use WinZip's password self-extracting features so don't really want to dump it, it's been my handy default zipper / packer since the mid 90's ah]...guess I'll have to get a stand-alone packer.

At least until they fix it I would use alternatives. And send the zip people a trouble report.

OK. WinZip removed - using 7-Zip which opens passworded files no problem - I like it.

Sounds good. I always like alternatives. Why muck around with a defective program.

Me too, I tried to change the options in Configuration>System, but without success. Now I use another zip program, like you *Wink
