Basically, the title! To acccess and copy some of the files in this HDD, I used another Windows 10 as an admin and gave the user I was using permission to access, read and write files. So, a lot of permissions have changed, and it did that one by one for each file of the drive.I was able to turn on the Windows once, but when I tried to login with my user, there was an error and it restarted. Now, I get a blue screen every time I try to start the HDD as a main not as an external drive. It automatically tries to fix it about 3 times, then it turns off without any success. What can I do to fix this

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Permissions error on external hard drive

    Hi Stacie,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

In order to get clarity on this issue and assist you with appropriate troubleshooting steps, please reply with the answers to the questions below.

    1. What is the complete error message that you get when you try to access QuickBooks from your external drive?
    2. Are you aware of any changes made to this computer prior to the issue?
    3. What is the version of your Windows 10 computer? (To check the version of your Windows 10, you can refer
See which version of Windows 10 you have).
    4. Are you facing the permissions issue only with QuickBooks or with any other file as well?

Meanwhile, I suggest you to copy and paste the QuickBooks file from your external drive to the desktop and check if you are able to access the file.

If you are getting Access Denied when trying to access QuickBooks, then please follow the steps mentioned in
"Access Denied" or other errors when you access or work
with files and folders in Windows
(this article applies for Windows 10 as well) and check if you are able to access the files from your external drive.

If you would like me to provide additional advice, please elaborate on the issue, so that we can understand the concern and simply respond to this thread. I will get notified and I’ll reply to you as soon as I can.

Access to files on external HDD

I recently bought a new Windows 10 computer. I already have an external HDD with my photos on. To migrate my other data (e.g. Office docs etc) from the C: drive on my old XP computer I copied the relevant folders to the external HDD. I intend to copy this
data to an internal HDD on my new computer, but before doing so I am deleting files that I no longer require. I am signed in with an administrator account on my new computer, but every time I try to delete or move a file or folder on the external HDD, a dialog
box pops up asking for administrator permission. Clicking 'Yes' enables me to delete or move the file/folder, but this is clearly laborious. Inspecting the properties of files/folders on the external HDD, I see that every file and folder has a blue/yellow
    shield against Rename and Delete.

Is there a way that that I can simply update the permissions on all files/folders on the external HDD to give full access to my administrator account, so that I can move/delete files without needing to give permission every time.

Note - At the end of the day I want to move the Office docs etc to an internal HDD on my new computer but leave the photos on the external HDD. But I want my administrator account to have full access to both types of file.
