I did this by complete accident and people are saying it is bad and makes the pc unstable making icons disappear etc. I have yet to encounter these issues people listed but just incase would like to know if there is a fix that doesn't involve reinstalling windows.

Accidentally changed owner of C Drive

Yesterday, I was changing owners from other drives and I accidentally changed of C drive as well. Today morning when I started my PC, I could not any fonts or texts on my screen or any applications. How does Settings display fonts intact?

I even tried resetting my PC but it undoes the changes after some progress.

I have posted this from my laptop, I cannot see files to upload my screenshot from my PC.

Any solution to this? Formatting will be my last option as there are few important softwares linked.

    regards,

    nirmal

  3. Can't edit permissions or add new users to C Drive. (FIXED, SOLUTION IN OP)

FIXED: Last ditched attempted at fixing this, thanks to Reddit. Saved me a lot of time instead of resetting PC

Step 1: On the drive with the issue (my case it was the C Drive), right click it and select properties. Under the security tab click Advanced, then at the top next to Owner change it to you (name/whatever your account is called), instead of TrustedInstaller.
    Click Apply then OK.

Step 2: Exit out and fix the Administrator and User permissions by rechecking the boxes that you accidentally unchecked. Hit Apply then OK.

Step 3: Restoring TrustedInstaller as Owner (important step) follow guide: Restore TrustedInstaller as Owner and its Permissions to default in Windows 11/10

Step 4: After restoring TrustedInstaller, hit Apply then OK.

    Fixed.

Thanks all that helped, and good luck!

I accidentally changed the owner of drive c: from system to my user account and I don't...

access denied after trying to change c drive owner

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

It is very important that you do not try to change the owner of the C drive or permissions on the C drive, you will corrupt Windows by taking ownership of all Windows system files and you will need to re-install Windows

What happened on your PC before you started getting the permissions error on your C drive, did you make any changes to our user account?

Do you use a cloud service like OneDrive, Dropbox...etc to sync your files?
