  1. I am connected to the internet. My browsers have forgotten that there is a DNS server.

On a PC running up-to-date Windows 10, I disconnected the wired connection and connected to the wireless access point at home.

After this, none of my browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Edge) is able to access web sites by name. Access by IP address works. Chrome and Edge (if I remember well) explicitly state DNS problems; Chrome says "no such domain" as if the DNS request had yielded a negative result.

nslookup on the command line knows of no such problems. See screenshot with Chrome. The Network Troubleshooter finds nothing. When I plug in the cable, everything works again. When I pull it, same bizarre story.

    What's wrong here?

EDIT: The cookie monster swallowed my screenshots, but I found that not only the browsers have this problem. The command line suffers from split personality, even after following Kapil's advice and resetting the network:

    C:\>nslookup google.com
    Server: homeserver.home
    Address: 192.168.1.16

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: google.com
    Addresses: 2404:6800:4004:818::200e
    172.217.25.78

    C:\>ping google.com
Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again.

    C:\>

Why does the system find the address of google.com, but then it says it can't find it?

EDIT2: I read about the name resolution cache in Windows. Presumably, it is deleted with the command ipconfig /flushdns. However, flushing the cache doesn't improve my problem. Yes, I did check if anything was in the cache ipconfig /displaydns.

I also used Wireshark to trace traffic. As expected, when I use nslookup, packets between the PC and the DNS server are exchanged. When I ping, however, there is no traffic.

    :)

  2. dns probe finished no internet

    Hi Oxide,

After some trial-and-error testing of all suggested fixes, which I found over the internet, here’re what worked for me to solve "DNS Probe Finished No Internet" issue and might work for you as well.

Method 1: Change Default DNS Address to Open DNS

Here all you have to do is change your default automatically obtained DNS server addresses to open DNS or Google DNS. To do this, follow below mentioned steps:

    Step 1:
Right click on Network icon located in Windows Task Bar Menu.

    Step 2:
Click on ‘Open Network and Sharing Center.’

    Step 3:
Click on Local Area Connection with whom who are presently connected and click onProperties.

    Step 4:
Select ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’ and click on Properties.

    Step 5:
Now in newly opened windows, select the radio button that reads ‘Use the following DNS server address:’

    Step 6:
Now in the ‘Preferred DNS Server’ box type in 208.67.222.222 and in ‘Alternate DNS Server’ type in 208.67.220.220.

    Step 7:
Now check the box that says ‘Validate settings upon exit’ and then click on OK. That’s it.

  3. DNS server causing problem

    Hi Andrea,

DNS is a server that translates websites' addresses so that browsers can connect to them. If the addresses become outdated or the server has issues, problems and DNS errors occur. For us to provide an accurate solution, we would need you to answer the following
    questions:

    • Which build, version and edition of Windows is installed on your computer?
    • What changes have you made to your device before this issue occurred?
    • Are you experiencing the same issue regardless if you are trying to be connected to a wired or wireless connection?

For initial troubleshooting, we suggest deleting the DNS cache. This can refresh the DNS files and settings on your PC. Follow these steps to delete the DNS cache:

    • Using Search type Command Prompt.
    • Form the search results, right click on Command Prompt (Desktop app) and then choose Run as administrator.
    • In the Command Prompt window, type ipconfig /flushdns and then hit the Enter key.
    • Once done, restart your computer and then check if the same issue persists.

We are looking forward to your response.

    DNS SERVER NOT RESONDING

    Hi Rita French,

This issue often occurs when the DNS settings are incorrect. I suggest you to perform the following methods to troubleshoot the issue.

    Method 1:

I would recommend you to change the Preferred DNS server and check if it helps.

    • Press Windows + R keys to open Run window, type
      ncpa.cpl and press Enter.
    • Right-click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click
      Properties.
    • Click to select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click
      Properties.
    • In the Internet Protocol window, let's change the Preferred DNS server to
      208.67.222.222
    • Click OK twice to complete the modification.

Note: If the issue persists, please repeat the steps and change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.220.220.

    Method 2:

If that does not help, try to flush the DNS. Follow these steps below.

    • From Start screen, type Command Prompt.
    • Right-click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Administrator.
    • Type: ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

Note: The ipconfig /flushdns command provides you with a means to flush and reset the contents of the DNS client resolver cache. During DNS troubleshooting, if necessary, you can use this procedure to discard negative cache entries from the cache, as well
as, any other dynamically added entries.

Hope any of these methods help!

    Kind regards,

    Leon
