Hey yall, I'm in need for help again. Recently, I had figured out that my computer was most likely suffering major drops in performance and random crashes due to the fact that my HDD was getting too old. So, I've decided to clone all info into a spare HDD that is 1TB, smaller than the 2TB one I am using right now.

The problem is, I had run the chkdsk c: /r command in the command prompt. I had it run for several hours yesterday. Despite this, when I opened the computer again and tried to clone to the new HDD again, it still showed up as an error.

I've tried programs such as Acronis WD True Image, and Macrium Reflect. However, Acronis WD doesn't seem to accept cloning to smaller devices, and Macrium Reflect seems to spit back error messages saying that the HDD is not in good shape, and to run chdsk c: /r.

I'm not sure where to go from here at this point. Is this a hopeless case, is my current HDD too far gone? I have a lot of information on this HDD currently, but I've only used about 0.6 TB of the whole disk, meaning that it is full well possible to do the clone. Are there any solutions to this problem? Did I just do something wrong with the chkdsk command? I'm a bit stumped, does anyone have any input on this case?

    :)

Cloned OS to SSD want to delete old OS on hdd

Not sure if this was answered(cant find 1) but recently cloned windows 10 from HDD to SSD. My HDD was setup as GPT and the partition was setup with the OS as almost the full 1tb size. I had and currently have alot of used space that i dont wanna lose if
it can be avoided. The whole cloning process was a pain having to move stuff to the ssd then partition the empty space on hdd the move stuff to the new partition until I had less than 200g with the OS still there so I can clone it onto ssd after cleaning
it. Os works fine(windows loads sooo much faster) old hdd works fine but wanna get rid of the old os on hdd without deleting anything else? Sorry so long and sadly I merged the partitions back to 1.

Clone a 1 Tb drive to a 512 Mb SSC

    Hi Vaughn,

    You can
clone larger HDD to small SSD
with a professional disk cloning software as long as the used space is smaller than the SSD. You will not worry it will clone the unused space unless you use sector by sector clone mode.

I suggest you to clone your HDD to SSD with AOMEI Backupper, if the used space is larger than the SSD, you can clone only the OS to SSD and keep the HDD as data storage. This software is very easy to operate.

    cloning a HDD

Thanks for a prompt reply. Yes, at the POST, i changed the boot order to point to the HDD that is attached via sata/usb cable. the computer still says there is no internal hard drive installed, and will not boot from the usb port that the cloned drive
is plugged into, nor from a windows 10 repair DVD. The cloned drive shows a full OS and files identical to the internal HDD that it was cloned from.
