Windows 10 1909 Causes Secondary Hard Drive to not be Recognized

Installing the Windows 10 1909 Update causes my secondary hard drive to not be recognized.

Steps to confirm issue:

• Secondary drive not visible in Windows Explorer
• Secondary drive not visible in device manager
• Secondary drive not visible in disk manager

Steps to replicate issue:

• Installing 1909 update

Steps to resolve issue:

• Uninstall 1909 update

Since updates can only be delayed for so long, an actual fix would be appreciated.

 

Whats up with all of the hard drive failures lately?

Motherboard faults do not cause drive failures directly. If a defective motheboard component causes drive failure it cannot be blamed on the drive, and IO errors are checked and noted by the drive itself, new harddrives perform bad sector checks during idle times, and will fix themselves automaticly, so unless you have a drive that is failing in a massive way a sector check is no longer truly needed by windows. Most drives come with more storage than listed for th esole purpose of having extra space to allocate when bad clusters are found.


Point in case was a older Maxtor drive that shipped with 30Gb, it was a 40Gb model and someone discovered that a bad sector count was added to the drive, after performing a simple firware upgrade to the next larger size all of the drive was available, and a actual low level count revealed 43Gb of unformatted space.

Thanks! We ran the Dell PSA Diagnostics which did indicate the hard drive test was unsuccessful. One suggestion made was to update drivers and firmware - I don't see how outdated ones would cause a hard drive failure, but is that possible?
