The photos from a win xp computer external drive will not open on my win 10 laptop. They fail to open because it says the file types are not recognized they are .jpg or .bmp. Any files saved from before 2006 will not open but those from later open ok. Before 2006 I used to backup my files using XP but since 2006 I copied the files directly from my camera to the external disk. I think this is the difference between the early and later saved files. I have also tried opening the files on a Linux system but get the same problem. It is as though win xp when backing up the files altered something in their format, is this possible ?

My win XP machine has died so I cannot use it to view the files so I am trying to recover them on my win 10 machine. Is there anything I can do without access to a Win XP machine or are the files totally lost. Of all the articles for win 10 failing to open jpg files there are manynone of them have helped, I have tried opening with multiple viewers all with the same result. I have tried converting the files to another format e.g. .bmp but the conversion programmes dont recognise the file format either. I don't believe all the files created before a certain date would be corrupt when none of the files created after that date are fine.

How exactly are you trying to save the photos from CD to Computer?

I suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps.

Open the picture folder form CD by inserting it to the Computer.

• Select the pictures and right click and click on copy.
• Open the folder from Computer where you want to save it.
• Right click on this folder and click on paste.

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.
