I built my PC and was wondering could I use the back up product key on the new device and configure my old device under a new OS?I want to make sure I won't lose the ability to use windows in the process since I don't have a windows key from any box.

Built new PC, bought Windows 10, can't verify product key.....?

I recently built a new PC:

Asus z97-pro

Intel i7

Samsung Evo SSD

It boots to the Asus UEFI bios utility just fine, and I updated the Bios via USB drive without issues.

I purchased Windows 10 for a clean 64-bit install, used the recommended installation utility program to create a USB ISO for a new PC, and restarted the PC with the USB plugged in.

The windows install software starts up, but displays a Windows 8 logo.

When prompted, I enter the region, language, time data, and go to the product key verification screen.

My product key, sent via the proof of purchase email, will not verify.

The key is correct.

The PC recognizes all devices and values.

Why wont the product key work?

 

Product Key

Keys are not required for the upgrade process. Windows 10 has a built-in generic key which it uses to install - it acquires the underlying Win7/Win8 activation during the upgrade process and assigns your device ID as a valid Windows 10 activated device. Subsequent installs will thus activate using your device ID. You will not require a key - should you be prompted, select "skip". Activation is automatic thereafter.

Using the current device's product key on my another device.

On old PC:
Uninstall retail product key:

1. Disable secure boot(if turned on in BIOS)
2. Boot into Windows
3. Enter slmgr /upk and wait for this to complete. This will uninstall the current product key from Windows and put it into an unlicensed state.
4. Enter slmgr /cpky and wait for this to complete. This will remove the product key from the registry if it's still there.
5. Restart
6. Wait a little while and then use the retail key on the new machine.
7. Set up secure boot(recommended)

Your old machine should go back to home, or you might need to do a clean install, I'm not sure there.
