Windows 10: I cannot open many of my photos stored under Pictures

I am not sure where to post this - have chosen files and storage, as there is nothing I can see related to photos.

Problems I have

I have always uploaded photos and stored them under PICTURES in folders, dated by month, so I can work with them on photoalbums. This is why I want to store them the way I do. So I can access them and copy them onto the Album App.


Then I upgraded to the current Windows. I have not made an album for many months because of the problems I have experienced in storing and accessing my photos.


First annoying thing - they have duplicated themselves. So I went through a number of folders and deleted the copies a tedious task. Hey, I still have duplicates when I re-opened the folders. Such a waste of time and effort to have deleted the copies. and so frustrating to have to wade through so many duplicates.


Second problem


I was looking at photos from a year ago yesterday.

Now I cannot even open photos in most of my folders. I see the windows icon instead. I can see photos in one of my very recent folders


third problem

This is related to the second problem. I took a screen shot to attach to this post, but that screenshot also just shows as a window icon when I view it under Screenshots. However when I went to attach it, I could see it, and it is showing here.

Windows 10: Photos App is not working while opening pictures.

This issue might occur if photo app is corrupt or there is change in photo app settings.

To assist you better, please provided us the information below:

• Have you tried to checked the issue by opening pictures present in the external USB drive?
• Have you made any changes in the photo app prior to the issue?

I recommend you to follow the steps below to run Windows Store apps troubleshooter and also check if you are able to access photos app through search bar.



Step 1: I suggest you to run Windows Store apps troubleshooter from the below Microsoft Help Article and check if it helps.

Step 2: I recommend you to check if you are able to access Photos app through search bar.

1. Click on Search bar.

2. Type "Photos" without the quotes in the search bar and click on it.

3. Then check if you are able to open the app.

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.

 

Photos will not open

Trying to open pictures in photo app on laptop.

Window Store App troubleshooter - just says Windows store cache may be damaged Not fixed.

No changes made to computer.

Also it should be lifetime license as part of Windows?
