  2. Windows Update corrupted my Registry and Microsoft decided to turn off Registry Backup without telling me

    I’ve done all off the above options and none of them work not even reset system.

    They all fail because the registry is messed up. DISM fails with error 23 SFC scan now finds nothing wrong and bootrec /rebuildmbr doesn’t work because it’s not able to set the boot record because the registry is messed up.

    If the system can’t interact with the registry files and Microsoft stupidly disabled registry backup, none of the recovery tools work because… even recovery points require… you guessed it, registry access.

    How about you try renaming your registry files in safe mode to .old then reboot and then try to run any of the steps you suggested and watch how they all fail because they all rely on the registry files being accessible.

    Various issues with Windows after messing with permissions / registry

    Hi,

    Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    I understand that after making registry changes, you are facing multiple issues on your computer. I’ll certainly assist you with the issue.

    However, please let us know:

    • What happens when you try to access the applications from Start Menu?
    • Do you receive any error message/code?
    • When you say “I can't windows settings at all”, are you unable to access Settings?

    I would suggest you to try re-registering the applications and check if that helps. To do this, refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + X, and select
      Windows PowerShell (Admin).
    2. Paste the following command and press Enter:
      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
    3. Once the process is complete, restart the computer and check.

    If you are unable to open Settings, you may want to try repairing it using the PowerShell command mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + X, and select
      Windows PowerShell (Admin).
    2. Paste the following command and press Enter:
      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name windows.immersivecontrolpanel | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

    3. Once the process is complete, restart the computer and check.

    If the issue persists, I would suggest you to create a new user account on the computer and check.
    Refer the article Create
    a local user or administrator account in Windows 10
    .

    Let us know the results, we will be glad to help you further.

    I can't access anything on my windows after messing up registries

    Quick Access not searching Pictures folder

    Summary, that last suggestion didn't work.

    • I moved the pictures to another folder temporarily.

    • Since there were no troubleshooting steps for this scenario, just for the heck of it, I ran through the restore steps. Copied some pictures into the Pictures folder, ran a Quick Access search and initial problem remains: Searching all of QA doesn't find any files in Pictures folder, running search on just the Pictures folder does. I want to run a global search and find matching files in any/all of the Documents, Music, Videos, and Pictures folders.
    That article dates from 2015 and I'm guessing is out of date. I hope it didn't create potential future problems in my registry.

    Bottom line: I'm still looking for a fix.
