  2. BSOD - Critical Process Died

    Hi Tony,

The blue screen error with a stop code 'Critical Process Died' that you encountered can be caused by a recent update, device drivers that got corrupted or system files that got corrupted. For us to resolve your concern, kindly answer the questions below:

    • What changes were made or what updates were installed prior to the issue occurring?
    • Did you mean to say that you ran your device in safe mode when you said that you booted the device with only Microsoft Processes running?
    • Which version and build of Windows 10 is installed on your device?

As an initial recommendation, we suggest that you follow the steps on this
    link
to run the driver verifier. Driver verifier is an inbuilt tool in the Windows operating system, which helps you to test the drivers which may be corrupted. These corrupted drivers may contribute as to why you're getting a "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD)
    or stop errors.

We look forward to your response to our queries.

  3. BSOD due to CRITICAL PROCESS DIED

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand your concern as you are receiving Blue Screen of Death. We analyzed the dump file and found the faulty module:
    ntdll.sys & Dxgmms2.sys

    The SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLEDbug
check has a value of 0x0000007E. This bug check indicates that a system thread generated an exception that the error handler did not catch.

    The CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIEDbug
check has a value of 0x000000EF. This indicates that a critical system process died. A critical process is one that forces the system to bug check if it terminates. This can happen when the state of the process is corrupted or otherwise is damaged. When this
happens, as these processes are critical to the operation of Windows, a system bug check occurs as the operating system integrity is in question.

In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below:

    • What is the Version and Build of Windows 10 installed? (Type winver
      in Windows search/Run command)
    • What is the make and model of the PC/motherboard?
    • Do you have any non-Microsoft Antivirus/security program installed?

Meanwhile, we would suggest you to perform these methods and check if that helps.

Method 1: Run Memory Diagnostic Tool.

    1. Press Windows key or click on Start Menu and type Memory Diagnostic.
    2. Select Windows Memory Diagnostics and click on Restart now and check for problems.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    Method 2: Safe mode

Try booting your PC in safe mode. Refer to the article on how to
Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10

Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. If a problem doesn't happen in safe mode, this means that default settings and basic device drivers aren't causing the issue. Observing Windows
in safe mode enables you to narrow down the source of a problem, and can help you troubleshoot problems on your PC.

    Method 3: Clean boot

Try booting your PC in clean boot. Refer to the article on
How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note: Clean Boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program. Also, you may
not be able to use some programs in clean boot.

If performing a clean boot fixes the issue then, please refer to the section
How to determine what is causing the problem after you do a clean boot
to check which program is causing the issue.

Note: Please refer the section Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting
to boot the computer in to normal mode after troubleshooting.

    Method 4: Disable hardware acceleration

    Note:
Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection,
back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

Follow the steps to take backup of registry.

Refer the article to Create a system restore point.

    1. Press Windows + R key to open Run command.
    1. Type Regedit and hit the Enter key.
    2. When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following location:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft
      /Avalon.Graphics
    3. Find DisableHWAcceleration on the right pane.
    4. If missing then right-click on the blank area on the right pane and click New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it DisableHWAcceleration.
    5. Double click on DisableHWAcceleration and set its value to 1 to disable hardware acceleration on your Windows 10.
    6. Click OK, close registry editor and restart the PC to check.

    Method 5: Microsoft Update Catalog

Install the update manually by downloading it (6th option in the list) on the PC from
    Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Let us know the results. If the issue persists, we will certainly assist you further.
