I can't boot Windows 10 on new SSD without my old HDD installed

Hi. I had W10 installed on a HDD a while back and have just installed a fresh OS onto my new SSD. When I went to wipe my old HDD in Disk Management to use it as basic storage, I noticed two other partitions, EFI system and reserved. It let me delete everything except the EFI partition. Now after further reading I have discovered that I was meant to unplug all storage drives except for the one Windows would be installed on. I had no idea this was necessary. So is there a way to create an EFI partition on my SSD (Disk 2)? Or should I just reinstall Windows with everything else unplugged?

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Installation to new SSD while keeping old HDD

Installed a new SSD, so my PC now has two drives. Have been running Windows 10 on the old HDD. I want to install Windows 10 on the new SSD. Using the Windows ISO DVD I made there is no choice where to install WIndows 10. I am not sure how to remove Windows
10 from the old HDD and install it on the SSD to speed up boot.

I read where you cannot remove Windows 10 from the original HDD. Not sure if that is true.

  3. New windows 10 installtion on New SSD - wont boot unless old SSD present

It seems you installed Windows while the both SSDs were connected. This would have caused your current problem. Maybe it is sufficient to do this:

    1. Launch the Disk Manager.
    2. Right-click drive C:, then mark it as "active".
    3. Shut down Windows
    4. Open the BIOS and tell it that the new SSD is the primary boot device.
    5. Disconnect the old SSD.
    6. Boot up normally.

If this does not work then you might have to do this:

    1. Disconnect the old SSD.
    2. Re-install Windows on the new SSD, using the Media Creation Tool.

I can't boot Windows 10 on new SSD without my old HDD installed

Windows will not boot from SSD after reformatting old HDD

    hi Greg,

Thanks once again for your help!

so for some reason, my PC would not boot from my RAID if it was setup as RAID 5, I configured it with RAID 10 and I was able to install Windows on the RAID (SSD unplugged). I will move back to RAID 5 once I am able to boot from my SSD. I can't boot Windows 10 on new SSD without my old HDD installed :)

I installed Win10 on my RAID with SSD unplugged

Plugged SSD back in, booted from my HDD RAID and shrunk the SSD partition via Disk Manager.

Unplugged the HDDs and installed Win10 on the SSD unallocated space.

Dual boot now shows 3 boot options but I'm not sure why as I only have 2 partitions on the SSD and the HDDs are still unplugged. Windows Media is not able to repair the other 2 Windows boot options.

    I cannot find \windows\System32\Logfile\Srt\SrtTrail.txt under any of the drives (C, D, E and X)

And booting from the other 2 gives the same error as before but with different error code:

The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

    File: \\Windows\System32\winload.exe

    Error code: 0xc0000000e

Now I need to somehow repair the boot environment on my old SSD partition. Would you have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Felipe.
