I understand the primary purpose of this forum is to discuss issues pertaining to Windows but I saw a question similar to mine posted here so I thought I would ask. First some history. A few weeks ago I took some cardboard, paper, bottles, and cans to our local recycling center. While I was there I picked up some of the litter and threw it into the bins. I picked up a computer box propped up against one of the bins and was surprised to find an ASUS q553u laptop in the box. I took it home and plugged it in. The Cap Lock button lights up and I can hear the fan running but the screen stayed black. I googled how to fix a black screen and tried some of the suggestions but nothing worked. I googled how to disassemble the computer and now have it mostly disassembled. The previous owner did remove the hard drive so apparently he/she left the computer for someone to repair or for parts. I'm using it to hopefully learn a bit about repairing a computer, and if not repairing it, at least what a laptop computer looks like under the bottom case. I read that either the CMOS battery or the graphics processing unit could cause a black screen or possible the back light in the screen could have burned out. I would appreciate any and all suggestions. The laptop is an ASUS q553u. It has Intel Core I7. Presumably Windows 10 but I don't know, nor do I know any other details about the computer.

ASUS all in one PC hanging after login with black screen – desk screen never coming PC: ASUS ET2321I 2013 with windows 8.1 Observations: 1. Issue was observed first time when customer powered on PC on June 6. Before that desk screen was coming up OK. 2. PC boots OK 3. 10-20 seconds after user login screen goes black and stays there for more than 8 hours (I have not waited longer) 4. Mouse, keyboard and alt ctrl del working fine – task manager works fine and shows 99% idle 5. Tried to boot using all of the startup options F1-F7 – same issue 6. When booting in safe mode with command prompt I see no LAN connection – ipconfig does not show anything 7. Seeing some updates now and then 8. When booting from windows 8.1 usb and performing repair result is that windows can not be repaired. All info in log file is OK. Any suggestions? Br Peter
