I can't seem to edit my hosts files even with 'open as administrator' set on Notepad

Hey folksI am running Windows 11 and I am trying to edit my hosts file.I've been doing this for quite a while now without any issues, always being able to save/edit my hosts file. This time around, I am unable to do so. On my pc, I am the only user administrator, and logged in as such. On notepad, I've already 'run as administrator' and after editing my hosts file and saving, it saysYou do not have permission to open this file. See the owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission.I've tried restarting my pc, and there are no updates available for Windows at the moment as well.I

  2. Unable to edit Hosts file

    Hi,

We would like to ask how are you trying to edit the host file on your computer? Is there any chance that you are doing it via Notepad as administrator? If not, you can try doing the steps below:

    • Press the Windows key and search for Notepad.
    • Once Notepad is available, right-click and select Run as administrator.
    • In your Notepad, Click File > Open
and search for the following file: c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts
    • You can edit the changes as normal
    • Click File > Save to save your changes.

Let us know how it goes.

  3. Unable to open notepad as administrator with file parameter

    Hi,

I'm used to edit the hosts file by typing this in the start menu:

    notepad C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then I Ctrl+Enter so that it opens as administrator the file and I can edit then save it.

It was working for a long time, but today, it seems like this is not working anymore.

If I execute the query without administrator rights, it opens the file. But if I execute the query with administrator rights, it opens a blank file, like it's not picking the hosts file.

I made a small video with this issue:

Am I the only one with this behavior?

    Thanks,

    Problems With Editing Hosts File

Hi I'm an administrator on my computer, however for some reason I am unable to edit my hosts file. I have tried everything there is to try. For example, I have run notepad as administrator opened hosts file, edited host file, then copied it to my desktop,
then tried to replace the hosts file but access was denied. I have also tried unsetting the etc file from read only to not read only but even then i don't have permission. Can somebody please tell me why it says I have no access but when I go to my settings
and user info it says I'm an administrator
