Windows 10: I can't seem to open start menu, use the search bar, and run settings.

I've been trying to replace my wallpaper but it didn't open the settings app. When I tried opening the start menu to manually open it, the start menu didn't open. The search bar didn't pull up either. When I tried to run it using Win+R, I got the error -2144927436. I tried finding corrupt files, but it had an error. How do I resolve this?

This issue might occur if some system files is corrupt.



To assist you better, please provided us the information below:

• Are you getting any error message when you click on Start Menu?

I suggest you to follow the steps provided in Microsoft Help Article about Start menu issues and also try to start Windows Search service. Check if it helps.



Step 1: I recommend you to refer to the suggestion provided in the Microsoft Help Article and check if it helps.

Step 2: I suggest you to try to start Windows Search services
and check if it helps.

1. Press Windows Key + R Key.

2. Type "services.msc" without the quotes and click on it.

3. Search for Windows Search.

4. Double click on it and under Startup type, select
Automatic.

5. Then click on Start button.


Note: If you are not able to change the Startup type, then continue starting the service by clicking on Start button.

Can open Start menu but can't search

Hi @Lemmers.

You can most probably fix this through turning off cortana and bing.

1. Click *Start + R to open run
2. Type regedit
3. Navigate (in address bar) to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search
4. Right-click the Search icon and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the new value BingSearchEnabled
5. Double-click the new BingSearchEnabled value to open its properties dialog. The number in the “Value data” box should already be 0—just ensure it’s still 0. Click OK to continue
6. Below BingSearchEnabled, you should see CortanaConsent. Double-click this value to open its properties dialog. Change its “Value Data” box to “0”.

If you don’t see CortanaConsent, create it by following the same steps you used to create BingSearchEnabled.

After restarting computer let me know how you get on.
