  2. Windows Account versus Office 365 Account

    [Edited]

Office 365 (which Microsoft now calls Microsoft 365) and Windows are two separate products. Windows is the computer operating system and Office/Microsoft 365 is a collection of office-type applications like Word and Excel. As separate products, each requires its own username and password. That's the easy part. Now, here comes the fun part.

    Some background:

A cloud account is simply a user account that exists on the internet, aka 'the cloud.' A Microsoft account is Microsoft's version of a cloud account, just like a Google account is Google's version of a cloud account and iCloud is Apple's version of a cloud account

The opposite of a cloud account is a local account. A local account only exists on the computer that originally created it.

Your Windows user account can be a cloud account or a local account. I use a local account as my Windows user account.

Everyone needs to have a Microsoft account, even if you never sign in to Windows with a Microsoft account and only sign in to Windows with a local account - like me. The reason is that many Microsoft products require you to have a Microsoft account. Office/Microsoft 365 is one such Microsoft product. Other Microsoft products that require you to have a Microsoft account include OneDrive, Outlook.com and Xbox, among many others.

And now, here's what happened in your case:

Your mother-in-law needed to sign in to her Microsoft account in order to initially subscribe to Microsoft 365. Subscribers to Microsoft 365 are allowed to share it with up to 5 family members. You are one of those family members. So you have a copy of Microsoft 365 to use, just as if you bought and paid for it yourself - and it's completely separate from any other family member's copy of Microsoft 365.

In order to use your copy of Microsoft 365, you need to be signed in to your Microsoft account, so when you open any Office app and go to File > Account, should see your own Microsoft account. Just keep in mind that you are able to use Microsoft 365

because your mother-in-law shared one of her 5 copies with you.

All this is completely separate from how you and her sign in to Windows.

Windows account cant access Office 365 Family license

My husband recently renewed his Office 365 and shared the license with me (as he had done previously). Since this renewal, i am unable to use the Office license if i log into windows under the same MS account as i use for Office 365.

    • my MS account shows that the license is shared with me.
    • if i log into windows under another (local) account, i can use the Office 365 shared license (I log into office 365 using the MS account)
    • if i log into windows under the MS account, then log into Office 365 under that same MS account, it says i am not licensed to use Office 365.
After a 3 hour chat session with MS, it was concluded that i will need to log into windows under a different account if i want to use the MS Office license. During that 3-hour session (and before) we uninstalled/reinstalled office, and deleted numerous license
keys, to no avail. The tech decided that my windows account must be corrupted, and since he was an Office tech (not a Windows tech), he didnt know how that could be fixed, other than to use separate accounts for Windows and Office.

I can live with having 2 different accounts (1 for windows and 1 for office) but this seems like a dumb solution, especially when it used to work fine until this recent renewal.

    Any insight welcome.

I can't sign in to every windows applications like office 365, or local windows account...

Office 365 applications issue with Windows 11

I recently noticed that office 365 applications like word, excel and PowerPoint is having issue with Windows 11. Based on my initial observations, files synced in to my computer from OneDrive cannot be launched or having issues opening the documents with office 365 apps on windows 11.

Click to run feature is not working,

i.e. first attempt: while the app tries to launch a doc file, the word app tries to open and suddenly terminates without errors displayed.

Second attempt, the app tries to launch itself and encountered this error: "Do you want to start in safe mode?"

Either options don't work. To open the file you have to transfer it to the local drive. Not good in maximizing collaborative editing especially those who have enterprise licenses.

    Troubleshooting:

    • reinstalled office 365 thru office.com
    • online repair of office 365
    • quick local repair of office.365
    • EnableShellDataCaching in regedit
    • Disabled ActiveX settings and other options in it
    • Disabled all add-ins
    Still issue remains!
