  1. I can't take ANY of my data folders off READ ONLY.

The title pretty much says it. It's a disaster for just saving my work, and screws with backups so badly that I've actually disconnected from the cloud. The read-only attribute gets copied with the folders. I've already checked my multiple backup disks, and nothing has been updated for months, and for some reason the backup program didn't tell me this, but that's a different issue.

A summary: A folder that I never wanted on Read-Only is rendered useless by it. I go into its properties, the Read-Only attribute is checked with a solid square. I uncheck it, get the dialog box to apply the settings to folders and files within the container. I apply that. It runs normally. I close the folder and open it, and the read-only box is still checked with a black square, and sure enough, it acts like it.

This exact problem isn't just on the C: drive. It's with all my backup drives running on my PC.

I've tried changing ownership to myself, adding an Everyone to the permissions and afterward giving it full control; I've tried changing them on my in my user folder, on my desktop folder, I've tried moving the folders to a different container; I've shut down my 3rd party virus protection; I've even tried to change permissions on the whole C: drive, which led to my reverting my system with a restore point. None of it has helped with this problem.

This is a repeat issue that I thought I remedied two months ago. No, I don't remember how I did it, but frankly, the dates on my backups suggest I either didn't, or the problem came right back.

    :)

  2. Read only folder

    Hi Jim,

We appreciate you for being part of Windows 10.

Before proceeding, we need more information to help you better.

    • Do you want to change the permissions to certain program/folder?

    • Have you signed in through Microsoft/Local account?

A read-only file is protected from accidental deletion and changes to its content.

Step 1: What is a read-only file or folder?

A read-only file is protected from accidental deletion and changes to its content. To change a file to read-only, right-click the file, and then click
Properties. In the Properties dialog box, click the
General tab, and then select the
Read-only check box. To make changes to a read-only file, clear the
Read-only check box, or save the file with a different name.

Step 2: Prevent changes to a file or folder (read-only)

Setting your important or personal files to read-only can help protect them from unintentional or unauthorized changes. When a file is set to read-only, it cannot be changed.

    • Right-click the file or folder you want to set to read-only, and then click
      Properties.
    • Click the General tab, select the Read-only check box, and then click
      OK.
If you need to make changes to the file or folder later, you can turn off the read-only setting by clearing the
    Read-only check box.

I hope the above information helps. Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with this issue. We are glad to assist you.

    Thank you.

trying to secure a backup folder, can't read w/o allowing rename

I have verified that this is indeed the case. When in myaccount, I view the directories (nested down a few levels) but I cannot copy the files all the way below the mybackup directory. The inheritance seems to work, i.e. there's only the same two access records that the parent has. I’m sorry. I rechecked my understanding and what you’ve observed would be the correct expectation. For access rights that display twofold—divided by a slash—such as “List folder / read data”, the left part would be the part relevant to folders with the alternative on the right ignored, and it’s vice versa for files. If you check “List folder / read data” on a folder and have the permission inherit, subfolders will effectively gain “List folder” and child files will get “read data”.

Testing reveals that “List folder / read data” alone is not enough to read the data of a file. The “List folder / read data” and “Read extended attributes“ access rights are the minimum access rights needed to open the contents of a file.

Don’t be misleading now; you’re not using Icacls here, but Cacls.

The purpose of the “Synchronize” access right is not really relevant for end users, hence you don’t get the option to set it through the GUI. You can easily lookup what it means, though I’m confident the definition will be abstruse for most.

I suggest granting “Read” permissions to myaccount. This is what you’re aiming for.
