Windows 10: I copied files and important data to an external hard drive and i think it were just...

HelloI needed to bring back my notebook and transfered all my files to an external harddrive before i reset the notebook.Now i wanted to open the files on the new notebook but I have only shortcuts there. I'm not sure if I just copied the shortcuts or if it made it by himself. Is there any possible way to bring back the files? Thank you for your help

Hi John,

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.

 

Windows 10: How to transfer data from an external hard drive to a new laptop

When I press Ctrl Key + V Key to paste it in the computer - as per Step 6 above - this starts to copy all files back into the same external drive.

Have the above instructions - Steps 1 to 6 - been revised since April 2016 and, if so, what steps should I follow?
