    WD Full Scan

    Hello,

Looks like you are having an issue with Windows Defender's performance.

There are several reasons why scanning drives for virus and malwares is taking a longer time than it should:

    • Your computer's specification.
    • The size of the hard drive.
    • External drives included in the scan.
    • Other running process and programs running in the background.
    • The number of infected files.

We recommend that you perform the following methods below before performing a full system scan to speed up the process.

    Method 1: Safe Mode

We highly suggest to perform all these tasks while in safe mode. To start your PC in safe mode, follow these steps:

    • Press the Windows key to launch the Start menu.
    • Select Settings.
    • Select Update & security.
    • Select Recovery.
    • Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
    • After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup
      Settings
      > Restart.
    • After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

    Method 2: Clean Boot

We recommend doing a clean boot in Windows, this will help eliminate software conflicts and start with minimal set of drivers and startup programs. Refer to this support article on: How
to perform a clean boot in Windows
    .

Give us update on the result and we will be glad to assist you further.

  3. Problem with WD

I ran a virus test file today on my wife's laptop. The threat already removed but after the scan WD keep detecting the threat, even though thread already removed.

I didnt have a problem running a full scan with WD since yesterday. My PC turns off halfway... 302395d1603017865t-problem-wd-untitled.png

As you can see in the screenshot, scan result "no threat found", but it's still there in "Current threats" list and won't go away
I've already restart the laptop and run scan couple of times, but it doesn't work. How do I fix this ?

Why does WD not check for latest updates before running auto scan?

I am a recent user of Windows 10 but experienced of Windows since DOS days, also been using MS Security Essentials for several years.

I have noticed that Windows Defender is more simplified compared to MSE, so my logical assumption is that for those functions that I cannot see, I assume it must perform automatically so that the user has no need to worry or intervene.

One of those selectable functions available in MSE, but not in WD, is that of enabling checking for latest updates before performing a scheduled scan. I also notice that there is no way in WD to schedule a scan and so I assume it happens automatically.

Today I noticed that WD checked for updates yesterday afternoon. It then did an automated quick scan today at 12:55 but without checking for updates. It then checked for updates and installed definitions at 14:54, that's 2 hours after the auto scan. You
may think no problem, it checked but they were no updates available, but the definitions are showing as created at 07:58 today, that's 5 hours BEFORE the scan and 7 hours before WD decided to check for updates.

Why doesn't WD apparently check for latest updates before scanning a PC, it's illogical and potentially dangerous? Just to be clear, WD seems to update fine otherwise once or twice a day, no obvious errors.
