Windows 10: i do not wish to use onedrive at all. am i just out of luck?

i recently built a new computer, and ended up with little to no recourse but window 11.If i wish my files to be stored in the cloud, i will put them there - with dropbox or google drive. but it seems that i cannot have a desktop folder, a my documents folder, or a PICTURES!!! folder that isn't tied to microsoft's onedrive cloud storage. the problem: i've spent all day moving files, trying to create desktop shortcuts to non-onedrive folders i made and it all either ends with MY folders being empty, or magically linked back to onedrive through the short cuts. it changes the shortcuts i make from

Windows 10 - OneDrive

Right click on the app and one of the properties has an option to not automatically start it. Uncheck, restart the computer, and it should stop. If you want to go another step further, find the OneDrive app in the start menu, right click on it and uninstall.

If that is still insufficient, there is a batch uninstaller for OneDrive available online. I can copy the code here if you need it.

It's going well so far, just accidentally installed Windows in a folder. Almost got it deleted, after taking ownership. This happened last time I made a custom ISO. There's a sequence to events I need to remember *Smile

- - - Updated - - - Finally, some progress. Another accidental install and a very long, take ownership to delete. And a ESD to WIM conversion. @Macboatmaster - Yes, you are correct. I'm trying to see if I can do an in-place upgrade without Edge creeping in. There is other stuff I remove, it's not all about Edge. It was all about Edge then I saw what I could remove and got rid of loads of stuff. There's an update I am stuck on, been stuck for months. I thought another would come along and it would carry on. So far, no new updates. I tried the preview, that failed also. First time I gave that a go. So now, new custom ISO to see if an in-place upgrade works.

Hey, I tried all sorts of things to uninstall Edge, you can't anymore. Once it's there, it's there. You can prevent it from being there in the first place, though. You need to disable internet during installation for that, otherwise Edge will appear. Even, if you had the internet disconnected for the main install. If you reconnect it when the machine reboots, so you can do the privacy settings and so on. It installs Edge. Once the new install has fully booted for the first time, then you can connect the internet. I've been doing stuff like this to Windows since 95/98, this is the first time MS seem desperate for something to be installed. Funny, really. - - - Updated - - - After a long time, my new custom ISO does a good clean install and updates, eventually. That's on a virtual machine.



- - - Updated - - - Ha, I give up. Not doing this latest update. The general updates were okay, some stuff to work out but mostly okay. The Settings app with that new banner, is not okay. Been chatting to MS support and they tell me it cannot be removed. They were funny about talking to me as I originally called the account Test. "You're using a test account", I had sent them screenshots. Hence the name change below. ;-)
