  1. I don't want a default audio device, I need a permanent audio device. Does that make sense?

This reminds me of that scene in Seinfeld when Jerry has to explain to the rental car company that they don't know what the word "reservation" means. "Yes, you know how to take reservations... but it's keeping the reservation that's the important part." I feel that way about Window's "Default" audio device. Anyone who does any sort of audio production or has a custom audio setup, deals with this constantly. I use a program that routes my audio in various ways, and its the only audio playback/recording device I ever want windows to use as its default. But I plug in another monitor, or add bluetooth headphones, or restart my computer, or switch to my TV, things I do several times a day, and windows switches away from my "default" audio device and to the newly added device. I do not want this to happen ever and I hate it.

  2. Permanently set default audio device

    Hi Joost,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you need assistance to set your internal sound card as the default playback device on your Windows 10 computer.

In this scenario it is required to disable the audio device of the docking station. Disabling the audio device for the docking station will enable the internal sound card. To do so,

    1. Right click on Volume icon on the taskbar > Open
      Sound settings.
    2. Click on Sound control panel option and click on
      Playback tab.
    3. Right click on the audio device for docking station and click on
      Disable.
    4. This results in enabling the playback device to internal sound card.

If the issue still persists, I suggest you to post your query in
    IT TechNet forums
, since the settings which needs to
be implemented on domain environment. We have dedicated team of experts who are equipped with the resources to suggest you with the further steps.

    Problem with audio devices

    Hi Marcello,

I appreciate you for trying some steps in order to get the issue resolved.

If you're connecting to an audio device using USB or HDMI, you might need to set that device as the default.

Open Start, enter Sound, select it from the list of results, and then, on the
Playback tab, select a device, then Set Default.

I would also suggest you to turn off Audio enhancements.

    • Go to Start, enter Sound, and select Sound Control Panel
      from the list of results.

    • On the Playback tab, right-click (or tap and hold) the
      Default Device and select Properties.

    • On the Enhancements tab, select the Disable all enhancements
check box and try to play your audio device.

    • If that doesn't work, select Cancel and, on the Playback
tab, select another default device (if you have one), select the Disable all enhancements check box, and try to play audio again. Do this for each default device.
Please revert if you face any issues with Audio.

    Thank you.

  4. I don't want a default audio device, I need a permanent audio device. Does that make sense?

Set new audio device default for volume mixer in Windows 10

    I use two audio devices:

    • Default (audio) device "Realtec Digital Output (Optical)"
    • Default communication device "Lautsprecher (Speaker)"

    My goal:
I want to have the default audio volume on my default communication device, instead of the default device - at all times.

    What I tried so far:
Changing the volume mixer to my communication device explicitly works temporary, but as soon as I close the settings window, the default audio volume is reset again to the default audio device.

Step 1: Clicking on volume shows me the default device:

Step 2: Changing the volume mixer to my communication device manually:

Step 3: Clicking again on volume does not keep the change I don't want a default audio device, I need a permanent audio device. Does that make sense? :(

How can I make it permanent that windows uses my communication device for default volume control?
