  1. I get this error: Privileged ports can only be forwarded by root - since the latest Windows...

I connect to a remote host using SSH and use port 22 forwarding in my ssh config file.

    OpenSSH_for_Windows_7.7p1, LibreSSL 2.6.5

Privileged ports can only be forwarded by root.

I get this error since the last Microsoft Windows 10 update: Privileged ports can only be forwarded by root.

I tried to run powershell or cygwin as administrator but this did not help.

Unfortunately the Restore did not work either.

    :)

    How to configure Port Forwarding?

You dont say what the router is so we dont have a clue and you dont say why or for what you are port forwarding.
The best way is goto Guides for Port Forwarding a Router find your router and it will give you step by step instuctions on how to do it

Does windows(10/server-2016) have privileged ports ?

I can bind to any un-used privileged ports with out admin credentials. Is this expected ? Is there no concept of privileged ports in new versions of windows ?

Below are the steps I followed:

    1. Logged in as non-admin user in Windows-server 2016.
    2. Installed python and started the server on port 80 using python -m SimpleHTTPServer 80
    3. Another user on the same system could access using http://localhost
Can anyone provide more in-sight into this ?

    Help with port forwarding!

Just for clarification: Port forwarding takes a packet that is addressed to your external (public) IP address and forwards if to an internal (private) IP address

    First step:

Go to What's My IP Address? Networking Tools & More

Your External (public) IP address will be shown at the top of the page.

This is the IP address that other users on the internet will use to connect to you.

    Second step:

Find your Internal (private) IP address.

This is the IP address of the Ethernet card in your PC

This IP address MUST be in one of the following ranges to be guarenteed to work:

    10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
    172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
    192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

    Third step:

Open up the admin application for your router and look for port forwarding/private servers option.

The screen will have a source port number (tcp and udp) and will also have a destination IP address and port.

    Example:

Your PC has a private IP of 192.168.0.2 and your run a game server that uses ports 2345 and 8977

In admin screen source ports will be 2345 and 8977 (an entry for each port will be needed)

Destination will be 192.168.0.2 port 2345 and 192.168.0.2 port 8977
