I got locked out of my Windows and had to re-install it. Microsoft Login is badly implemented.

It was my first my first time installing Windows 10. I did a ton of research, as much as I could. Watched videos, read a lot of text and whatnot. After installing windows with a local account, I was happy and used a little bit of my PC and internet also, and then shut it down. Still I was bound to make the big mistake of attaching my Microsoft account to my Windows key.

Next time when I turned my PC on, it showed me my Microsoft account name and a "Sign in" button. I clicked on it. It did some loading then said, "You need internet for this". I kept trying several things to no avail. I got locked out completely. Had no other option than to re-install Windows all over again.

Nowhere was this fact highlighted and stressed enough that if you login with a Microsoft account and shut down your computer, you won't be able to log back in and use your computer unless you have an internet connection. What. The. Heck??

This extremely important piece of information should've been highlighted in big bold red text as a caution everywhere on the internet wherever there is a Windows 10 installation tutorial, specially on Microsoft's own website!

Do you just assume that everyone in the world has a plug and play internet? Cable internet is very common not just in my country but in my region as well. We get a wired LAN connection which needs to be connected to the internet via a dialer provided by the company. And it goes without saying that the dialer cannot be used if you can't get to the desktop. Hence you're completely locked out of your system and the only way is to reinstall the entire Windows again. How convenient! Oh, and the best part is that you can't even get into Safe Mode because guess what? It also needs internet! Why the heck does Windows even need to be dependent on the internet to begin with to make it usable?

Whose idea was this to make it like that? Somebody just now told me that this Microsoft login prompt is just a one-time thing. Even if it is, then people like myself arestill screwed, because how can we even do that one-time internet login? We can't, because of the nature of our internet connections. Weneed to be at the desktop to use our internet.

Why couldn't Microsoft just make it so that you could just log in to your PC using a local account, then once you get to your desktop and connect to the internet, it would automatically log you in to your Microsoft account? How hard was that to do, seriously?

Now I'm forever afraid of logging in to my MS account ever again after what happened. MS account should only be a desktop thing, instead of a PC login thing. This is simply bad design.

Microsoft must seriously think about what they're doing. If any MS employee is reading this, you must seriously do something about it ASAP, and implement something like what I've suggested above. You promote Windows as a global product and hence you should be considerate of people living in all the regions of the world and make your product friendly and easily accessible to all of them.

    Thank you.

    :)

    Lock vs Login screen screenshot

    Hi Josey -

Thanks for the quick reply. While your suggestion does change the sign in process, it doesn't address the differing screenshot question. Following the steps doesn't make the login screenshot the same as the Lock screenshot. As I mentioned, I can't even find the screenshots being used for both screens.

Still looking a solution to this. Open to any other suggestions you might have to the problem. Thanks!

    Lock vs Login screen screenshot

You can use your own image of any background and just go to settings/personalize/lock screen and click on browse as in the image below. It should make whatever picture you use as the Lock Screen
