Windows 10: I hate W10

Hi there.

if you are a Mac user it's easy to run Windows -- run as bootcamp / parallels or other VM software. We have plenty of people at work using Macs running Windows as a VM for accessing corporate applications etc. There's no need to buy a PC simply to use Windows if you are a Mac user.

As far as W10 is concerned I think it works just fine --although have a few issues with it when using external monitors plugged into old laptops --- not being able to alter system fonts for menus, title bars etc makes these monitors sometimes not very readable. (Note I'm not talking here about altering the Font SIZE but changing the actual system fonts to use something more readable -- this feature was available on XP / W7 etc).

Running IOS on a Mac does not automatically isolate you from malware as recent exploits have shown either. Even Linux can get hacked into - so it's up to you the user to use whatever machine you have intelligently.

I will abandon windows / any app if advertising becomes too obtrusive -- so far though it hasn't happened yet -- at least not to the base OS.

If I have to pay for system updates then that's another matter where I would consider switching the OS. Of course I'd pay for a new release - but for updates and fixes --- no thanks.

I have seen a comment from a guy berating 10 and switching back to 7 because Solitaire is not as good.

The new Solitaire is horrid though. I just installed the old one from 8 (and minesweeper and so on) - it seemed a less drastic response.

 

There isn't a decent o/s out there. The Mac brigade comes across as a bunch of true-believer snobs (I know several personally and they have a Jehovah's Witness look in their eyes when they talk about Mac vs. Windows. It's hard to tolerate the smugness they exude. Macs are all snob reputation and nothing to back up the hype.

Sadly Microsoft have messed up every other release. Win98 finally got good but was so unstable as it was running on top of DOS. They screwed up with WinME but after a year of updates Windows XP became really excellent and I stuck with it until a couple of years back.
But Windows Vista was dog-dodo and it took that rubbish to create Windows 7 which was the best and most reliable Microsoft operating system ever, in my opinion.
Then came the corporate suicide attempt that was Windows 8.x. I tried to use it twice and I came close to dumping Windows altogether as Windows 7 has USB issues that they never bothered to fix.

And now we have Windows 10. I have been cautiously using it in dual-boot with the trustworthy Windows 7 and finally I have decided it is reliable enough to make it my primary o/s.

Yes there are still issues, as anyone who has experience with new operating systems expects, and it can take six months to a year to iron out these annoyances. But I feel, on balance, Windows 10 is good. Once you've disabled all the awful spying rubbish. I don't mind the forced-down-our-throats updates as Win10 is just out of the box and we need all the bug-fixes we can get for now. After the first service-pack stage I may find auto-updates less useful and more intrusive but hopefully there will be 3rd party apps out there to give us more control by then.

As a Windows 7 user I find Windows 10 so similar that I forget I am not using W7. I had to use a 3rd party start-menu app so I could get some control over the Start Menu and All Programs lists and I think this is something Microsoft NEEDS to make customizable as it is just awful at present. But these are early doors for this new o/s. Who knows where it will be in a year?

So for those who say they 'hate' Windows 10 maybe you are expecting too much, too early in the game. After all, its only a computer. As long as the operating system facilitates our computer needs and doesn't fight us what more do you want?

 

If you make a perfect ( anything ) car, tv, PC, power tools, operating system, how many do you think you can sell or better yet how much profit will you make in the long run ? To make lots of money is to make something not so perfect, this way you continue to feed the greedy corrupt stockholders ...

First off there is no way to make a perfect OS. With over 55 million lines of code there is no way to get all of the bugs out of it. And being in IT I can attest that trying to get a 100K line program perfect is a huge challenge.,

This has nothing to do with greed.. it's all about the issue of size of the OS's code base.

We live in a world were by you create something not to last for a long time because if you were to create something really good in the long run you will not profit much from it . Good example would be Windows XP, even until this day there are still many using it even knowing its not supported ain't long, why ? because its simple to use and it does what needed for most . That's another reason why they stop supporting it .... Spend, spend and spend . Most people in general don't need an new operating system

 

Than they can stay on it but unfortunately, computer tech is going forward and staying with an obsolete system that can't keep up with HW will not be of any use for newer SW.

 

To me it's not a question of having the perfect OS, it's having the perfect Desktop.
With Windows 10, I have finally achieved this.
I run Ubuntu in a VM and Windows as an anchor.
If I want to do something on the fly I use File Explorer, if it's more complicated I can use Nautilus in Ubuntu or even 7Zip in windows. Customization or Audio Visual, again my VM.
Windows 10 and Ubuntu, both, use so little resources I can afford to run my VM all the time, being my CPU is the bottleneck on my system, that makes Windows 10 as a host OS my #1 choice.

 

Life is about change and moving forward and not staying static. People in general want new and better things then they have previously. It's not about cooperate greed but it's about the desire for better products. While Xp was a nice OS it's time has come and gone. Now with WIn8.1/Win10 we have a more secure and efficient OS that fits the needs of today's users.

 

Too true been a long time coming and at last they woke up and listened to us the users, and also at last a new Browser that works without crashing.

@BunnyJ -- some things will last a long time --great artwork. a good building, decent hand crafted wooden furniture etc. It's not 100% hopeless these days. I must admit as far as NON classical music is concerned however I have yet to hear a piece I like that was composed after about 1979. !!! The modern stuff to me sounds too much like electronic interference and mechanical Road Drills --usually THUMP THUMP type of nightclub stuff with about as much emotion as an electric kettle.

excuse a bit of Politics here (in this case it's relevant though). Companies like Ms NEED investors to finance stuff --it's impossible to finance really large projects via Bank Loans or Cash in the Bank. -- Also as a semi retiree- I'm glad my Pension was decently invested --how many people think they could live their retirement just relying on a State Pension --even in more generous countries such as the Nordic ones and Germany. By lending to these corporations (via Pension Funds / directly etc) individual investors actually get a chance to receive a payback from any profits.

These days with healthy life styles it's easy to think of huge swathes of people living to 100 or beyond -- it's already happening in several countries. If you say retire at 60 / 65 you could expect another 40 years or so ON A PENSION --probably LONGER in retirement than actually in Work !!.

I know this is a bit political --but this is really relevant -- and we shouldn't try and stop companies like Ms from making money --and being innovative does involve risk taking.
