Windows 10: I have a 500GB driver that says it has 216GB of space in total, why is this?

I have a Dell G16 Gaming laptop, with 16G of RAM and 500G of storage. My driver says that it only has 216G of storage available. I downloaded SpaceSniffer and TreeSize to view my files, and both say that my driver has 166G used up, so I don't understand why my driver has only 216G. I was told that my computer needs certain files to run, but do they really take up 284GB? If so, why is this, and how can I free up space?

Wrong Hard Drive Total Space

I recently got a Dell laptop (500GB SSD) as it by default came with only C: drive (Single Drive) , I went ahead and tried to shrink the volume to 114 GB so that with rest of the unallocated I can create a second say D: drive. It first threw some error like "Operation failed" something like that I don't really remember and secondly the whole trimmed space is now not visible and is hidden.. See below screen-shot :-









I am wondering if anyone have encountered same issue before or if they were able to resolve it without formatting the laptop.

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Method 1:

I suggest you to try running Printer troubleshooter and check if it fixes the issue. To do so kindly follow the below given steps:

• 
  Type troubleshooting in the search bar.
  

• 
  Select Troubleshooting.
  
• 
  Select View all on the top left corner.
  
• 
  Click on Printer.
  
• 
  Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.
  
• Check if issue persists.

Method 2:

This issue may arise due to printer’s driver incompatibility with Windows 10. I suggest you to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps.
To do so kindly follow the below given steps:

• 
  Right click on printer’s driver that you have downloaded from manufacturer website.
  
• 
  Click/tap on Properties.
  
• 
  Check the Run this program in Compatibility mode for under
  Compatibility tab
  
• 
  Select Windows 8.1/8 from the drop down under
  Compatibility mode section.
  
• 
  Click on Apply and
  Ok.
  

Install the drivers, restart PC and check if issue is resolved.

STRANGE ISSUE - 2TB HardDrive Storage is linked to 500GB Drive Storage

Hey @Try3 and @Dinges8 So I would like to agree with you both and say that it is a temporary file probably, however, this test I just did has proved that it is not. I tested a a smaller copy, of 7 GB, onto Drive D that was small enough to complete. However, after the copy had finished, the total free space of my C drive has decreased by 7GB, on the free space on Drive D has not changed (even though 7GB was just copied onto it). Therefore, this proves that content within Drive D, is actually taking up storage on Drive C.

Do you guys have any other suggestion? Kind Regards Scott
