Why would I ever want to switch to Windows 11? Battery life and all the other laptop-centric benefits are of no interest to me. Learning curve with OS 11? Cost to upgrade my entire mother board? Time lost doing this conversion?

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Windows 10 desktop not fully loading and cursor cannot click anything

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

The experience you've described can stem from several potential issues, including system corruption, pending updates, or hardware problems exacerbated by the laptop's period of inactivity. Here are steps for troubleshooting and ideally resolving the issue, as well as how to transfer your data if the system remains unresponsive.

    Troubleshooting Steps:

    1. Restart your laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can clear temporary glitches causing the desktop and mouse issues.
    2. Safe Mode: Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the issues persist. Safe Mode loads Windows with a minimal set of drivers and can help diagnose if the problem lies with a recently installed program or driver.
      • If the desktop loads correctly in Safe Mode, you might need to disable or uninstall recently added applications or drivers that could be causing the problem.
    3. System File Check (SFC): Run the System File Checker to repair damaged Windows files. To do this, you'll need to access the Command Prompt, which you can do even if the desktop isn't fully operational by booting into Safe Mode with Command Prompt or using the Advanced Boot Options.
      • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    4. Check for Updates: If you can access the settings or manage to get the system running, check for and install any pending Windows updates. These might include critical fixes that could resolve the issue.
    5. Update Drivers: If possible, update your laptop's drivers, focusing on the graphics and chipset drivers, which can affect overall system performance and stability.
    Data Transfer:

If you're unable to resolve the issue or simply wish to retrieve your data, you have a couple of options:

    1. External Hard Drive via Safe Mode: If you can access your files in Safe Mode, connect an external hard drive and manually copy the files over.
    2. Remove Hard Drive: As a last resort, you can physically remove the hard drive from your laptop and connect it to another computer using a USB to SATA adapter. This lets you directly access and transfer the files.
    3. It's unlikely that merely not using the laptop has caused it to "wither"; however, the battery and possibly the HDD could be in poorer condition.
    4. If technical troubleshooting seems daunting or if crucial data is at stake, consider consulting with a professional.
To avoid future scenarios like this, regularly update your system, perform routine maintenance, and back up vital files to the cloud or external storage.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

    Best regards
