Windows 10: I have brand new WD 18TB physical SATA disks which show CanPool as 'False'. How to fix this?

I have brand new WD 18TB physical SATA disks attached to Windows 11 23H2 via USB 3.2 Gen2 enclosures. None of the drives has any data on them, and they have been 'cleaned' using DISKPART, but they still show up in 'Get-PhysicalDisk' as CanPool FALSE. How can I enable them for Pooling? CannotPoolReason is 'Insufficient Capacity', but the capacity of each drive is 16.37TB. I have tried all known steps to resolve this problem, yet it persists. I had the same brand and size of disks running pooled on a Windows 10 22H2 machine direct SATA and USB without issues. Also of note, the FriendlyName

Physical Disks cannot be pooled

Hi, I have a group of 7 physical drives connected to the SATA ports on the motherboard.



They are seen by the disk management tool as "Basic Disk" and there are no volumes defined ("Unallocated"). Each drive is 1TiB (931.5 GB to be precise).



Now, I would like to create a striped volume with parity from these drives, but the system considers them unsuitable for the purpose due to "Insufficient capacity":

The "CannotPoolReason" is a mystery to me as they are empty and with 1TiB capacity.
What am I doing wrong ?

 

Windows 10 shows incorrect free disk space on 18TB WD external drive

Windows 10 shows incorrect free disk space on 18TB WD external drive encrypted with Veracrypt. I have 2 WD Elements Desktop WDBWLG0180HBK with 18TB storage capacity. The drives are both GPT and Windows 10 sees these drives and the entire storage capacity. Then I completely encrypted the drives with VeraCrypt using exFat. Windows 10 sees the drives and the entire storage capacity. Then used FastCopy to copy large amounts of files from the Synology NAS to an 18TB drive. Windows 10 now indicates that the drive still has 2.3TB of free space. When I view the 18TB drive with applications such as WinDirStat or Folder Size, they indicate that there is much less space in use and that there should therefore still be a lot of space free. For example, WDS indicates that 9TB is in use, 2.3TB is free space and 5.1TB space is in use by unknown (see attachment). How can I solve this problem?

Update: I tried to place more files on the other 18TB drive, resulting in Windows 10 reporting 'disk full' (see attachment).

 

disk shows up in powershell get-disk, but not in get-physicaldisk

I have added a new drive to my machine. I can see it in drive manager, and format it, and use it.

I want to add that to an existing storage pool

I try to add it using the manage storage pool app, but it always fails tells me something is using the disk

I tried to first take it offline, and same thing

I tried to unpartition it, so it is raw, and add it that way, same thing.

so I wanted to try to add it using powershell.

I can see the disk when I run get-disk, but it does not show up when I run get-physicaldisk

all of the commands I can find tell me how to add a physicaldisk to a storage pool, but I cannot figure out how to get a disk to show up as a physicaldisk.

and my new drive 2, healthy and online, with the correct serial number from the drive
but disk 2 does not show up as a physicaldrive

One note, initally I had the same "friendly name" listed in get-disk and get-physicaldisk with different serial numbers

I am trying to add a second drive that matches the first. same model, so it initially got the same friendly name, but I changed it with

set-physicaldisk -friendlyname ST32000542AS -newFriendlyName Disk4
but I cannot figure out why the second disk does not show up as a physical disk
