Setting up a network

in order to get permission, you need to add a user to the shares list for that folder.

Keep in mind for you to add a user name (say, Kurgan) that username must exist on both PC's *and* have the same password on both.

99% of people who set up network sharing simply set folders as read only (media folders, games etc) and then set up a "dump" folder with full access, so when you want to paste files you do it in there.

Yes its a big issue with the security, i lost every EXE file on a 400GB drive once due to a nasty virus attacking my network shares from a housemates PC.

 

How to limit Windows Sharing to one PC on a network?

Is the one PC in particular a different PC on the local network?

You could restrict by using Password Protected Sharing in Network and Sharing Center advanced settings. Then create a user or user(s) with credentials (passwords), and add them to shares or remove them from shares. Then if you don't want someone accessing anymore, lock their account, remove it, change the password. Probably above and beyond what you need for this situation though.

 

Share a folder over a home network without password prompting

There used to be a need for an extra step in some conditions** but I thought that need had disappeared [I still do the extra step routinely so I have not tested its need for several years].

You used to have to
1 Set password protected sharing On
2 Create a local Admin account with the same name on every computer and set the same password for each of those accounts.
3 Enter the Admin's password when first challenged [when first trying to access a shared folder across the network].
[4 There was no further call for this password - it was a first-use-only thing.]

Perhaps this is still a useful step? Hopefully, a network buff will chip in soon.

In the meantime, you might check if you have included all the steps in Share Files and Folders Over a Network - TenForumsTutorials and that your Workgroup name is the same on all network computers.
