Hello Forum,

What type of Win 10 license should I have if I purchased Win 10 Pro upgrade from the Microsoft Store online?

I would presume I would have a retail license. Is that correct?

The Win 10 Pro upgrade was installed on a new HP Laptop that came with Win 10 Home preinstalled. I would think that the HP Laptop with Win 10 Home preinstalled would come with an OEM license.

Does the license change from OEM to Retail when I install the Win 10 Pro upgrade purchased from the Microsoft Store online?

The new LG computer had Windows 11 Home pre-installed. I backed an image of that up to my NAS using Macrium Reflect, then overlaid the SSD on the LG with the image of Windows 10 Pro from the defunct HP computer. That Windows 10 system image on the new LG reports a different product key than the product key that same (now transferred) Windows 10 Pro system reported when it was installed on the now-defunct HP. Settings>System>About says that Windows thinks it's still installed on the HP from which it was transferred. slmgr /dli says it's a Win 10 Retail license that's "Licensed". Given all this, how do I straighten out the Win 10 Pro now installed on the LG, and what do I do to ensure that Microsoft has the correct license+system info?

Even when the purchase was for upgrade from Win XP? The box has a block that says "Upgrade designed for Windows Vista". I never had Windows Vista - I went straight from XP to Win 7 Pro. I seem to recall working with a MS rep at some point to make sure the license was recognized as a valid retail license, which (I think) is why I have never had a problem with getting Windows updates. The license seems to have been recognized for years as a valid retail license on both the PCs that preceded this LG.

Since I didn't buy the license and media from the MS store, can you suggest how I might resolve my question about the validity of this product key as being for a transferable retail license? And can you tell me why Settings>System>About reports Windows 10 Pro on the LG as still being installed on the HP system from which I transferred it?
