I hooked up 2 monitors to my laptop but can't have separate apps open on all 3. 2 of the screens have the same app open. How can I change that

Hook up of 2 monitor to laptop

I have an HP laptop running windows 10. I want to hook up an HP monitor to run as a second screen for work. The monitor came with a high speed USB cable. When I plug it into the laptop the screen on the monitor lights up with the HP logo and then goes black.
When I do get it to stay on, I can only get the same screen currently on my laptop, not the second window I want opened.

How do I fix this?

 

I have 2 monitors but display is showing 3

Display settings are showing 3 monitors when I only have 2. This was not a problem till I updated my Nvidia drivers now the screen that apps open on is the one I cant see. (I had to disconnect the 2nd Monitor to cet to chrome to write this and display tells
me I have 2 screens but I don't)

I rolled back the drivers but no joy - Next step I suppose is to Uninstall the video card and reboot to reinstall
