I just ran a Windows 11 update and lost my wallpaper and the ability to set it.

I was prompted to install the latest update to Windows 11, version 22H2 so I ran it. When my system restarted the screen background had changed to a dark brown and my image was gone. I went to "Personalize" to change it to what I had before and the only option available to me was the desktop color. There was no option to select an image. I tried a cold boot but got the same results.I searched in this forum and discovered that several users had experienced a similar thing back in March, April, and May. I'm surprised that I haven't seen it before. I also didn't see anything that definitively add

Lost the ability to update Windows

There are a number of us in the Windows Insider Program that have lost the ability to update Windows. There are some variations on the theme but, basically, Win10 will download the package and say that there is an update that needs a reboot to install. The install/reboot options are shown both in Settings-Windows-Update as well as in the power down options. However, if any of these options is selected, Windows will seemingly just restart (no indications of an update such as % counts or an error message). If needed, Defender definition files typically install as expected (no errors).

Perhaps we are at the point where we will need to concede to a rebuild *Devil but I thought I would see if anyone here might have a thought.

    For my specific situation:
    • Currently on Win10 1803 Build 17711
    • Windows has downloaded and is trying to install Build 17723 (the most current fast ring version)
    • MS Surface Pro 4 i5 with 8GB RAM and >100GB of drive space
    • Other than MS programs (e.g. Defender) there are no other anti-virus, malware or similar products

Although I may be forgetting a few things, I have tried most everything I could find online including the following (most of them several times in varying sequence):
    • Run the Win Update Troubleshooter (errors were found and fixed...green checkmarks)
    • Running the batch file in this tutorial (which completes successfully and will have the effect of causing Windows to redownload the installation files)
    • Manually stopping and restarting bits, wuausrv, appidsvc, cryptsvc
    • Deleting or renaming ...\SoftwareDistribution and ...\catroot2 folders
    • Running SFC and DISM
    • Pausing auto-update for several days
    • Disabling download-from-other-PCs option

    *Banghead

Thanks much for any additional thoughts.

Lost ability to access Win10 from WinXP machine

    Hi,

This is a lab I constructed since following this thread.

    Setup:

    Virtual Box
Windows 10 fresh install, latest ISO fully patched.
Windows XP Latest Version As patched as it need.

    Setup:
Both Virtual machines virtual adapters Bridged to my Local Network
    Both NetBios forced Enabled
    Both in the same Workgroup
Both firewalls located in Private network

    Enabled SMB1 on W10 Host

Created user named "monkey" with the password "banana" on both machines
Created a Share named !TEMP! on both machines, created a cookie File in each folder.
Give full control access to everyone and "monkey" on both shares.

From there I was unable to access the shared folder Without authentication period.
Automatic authentication did not work and using "Everyone full access" did not change anything.
I had to specifically log on the machine to gain any access.

    CMD output:

I just ran a Windows 11 update and lost my wallpaper and the ability to set it. [IMG]

If you want, you can do a step by step troubleshooting of your problem.
    From the problematic machine.

Try to view if your Machine appears on the Network List:
    Code:
If Your Machine appears on the list, try to view it:
    Code:
The available shares will be listed there.
If it does not work you can use:
    Code:
To verify if authentication is working properly, if it succeed, you can carry on... But nothing will be permanently saved.

Then Try to List the content of one of the directories:
    Code:
This should list the content of the directory,

If all this works Try to map a drive on the share:
    Code:
In my setup both windows are at the default initial configuration, no tweaks, and wont accept any of these commands without prior authentication.
