Anything better than i7-2600 in socket?

Hello all, I'm researching if there is a better performing processor than the one I have now.

I am running an i7-2600 in my (computer formally known as) iMac 12,2, which did have an i5, originally. I have searched online for processors of the same socket type and found that the 2600 seemed to be the best performer in socket size. Even the Xeons were shown as performing slower than the 2600.

Anyone know of anything better, please, that would be ace, I am only going by a table on a CPU upgrade site.

    Thanks Sean

Well, there is i7 2700k, I don't know about MAC but some consumer, windows compatible MBs with same socket can also use 3xxx processors.

Thank you CountMike, going by the UserBenchmark listings I am not sure even a 3xxx will provide any additional benefits. Intel seem to have done a rather good job on the 2600.

I can't find anything online regarding the iMac upgrades other than, just pick a processor that is sold as part of an OEM upgrade. No one has been brave enough to select something differenet. I cannot see why others wouldn't work. I upgraded the original i5 to the i7, the i7 was not from an Apple machine originally. Unless the system checked if the processor was one of the OEM options, which I would guess no. But then Apple like to play around with firmware all day long.

    Thanks again!
