Windows 10: I lost all my files and data after changing user profile name in windows 11

I bought my computer. When I received my laptop I change my account name but still on the hard drive appear my friends name I supposed it is because I bought the laptop from her amazon account, soo I saw some videos on youtube about "how to change username account" and I change it by entering into REGEDIT EDITOR files the sequence was REGEDIT--->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE--->SOFTWARE--->MICROSOFT---> WINDOWS NT--->CURRENT VERSION--->PROFILE LIST. After getting there I right-clicked on ProfileImagePath and selected MODIFY and change the acc

Need help with changing name of user profile folder

I would like to change the name of the user profile folder. I have found and tried a few methods including one from Microsoft forums. None of them worked. I kept getting something about my User needing to sign out and back in again that there was a problem, so I would sign out and back in again and it didn't work. I think the reason is because Windows created a TEMP user and would log me in under that so there would be a folder named C/User/TEMP and still the original named folder of C/User/myuserfolder.

The instructions are very similar to what I have tried. In the above post John W used safe mode. Do I need to go through all the steps again as listed in the post and then go into safe mode, or can I just use safe mode to change the folder name?

Also, are there newer instructions for how to do this with updates to Windows since the above thread was posted over a year ago?

Change User File Name

If your email address was used it will abbreviate it to the first five characters. This is easily changed in Windows Settings here:

However changing the User folder is more complicated and if not done exactly correctly can brick the install.

Change Name of User Profile Folder Tutorial-- Edited Name Won't Save.

I created a second temporary admin user name, logged in and found the correct file in the registry editor. However, every time I try to edit the user name, according to Step 8 of the tutorial here,

I get the following error message., "Cannot edit profile image path. Error writing value's new contents." Changing the case of the edited user name results in the same error.

I need to change the paths because my OS became corrupted and crashed recently apparently from a failed automatic update. Repair techs reset to factory settings and the default user, "Owner." I was able to go in and change the user name on the lock screen and start menu to my existing one, but since the folders are still "Owner," my third party automatic backup service software does not recognize this as the same computer and will not restore certain data nor back up new data. There have been too many programs and data already manually restored by the repair techs or me to delete "Owner" and start over.

I'm an experienced, moderately computer literate user who can follow instructions and links, but I'm not technical, so please keep responses specific and relatively simple. Thank you.
