Windows 10: I need a program to rename data files

Folks on one of these Microsoft forums have helped me once before on a similar problem. I am hoping that one of your will come through again.


So, I have been scanning images from old photo albums. The Epson Scanning Program that I am using allows the automatic naming of files, but it is limited in its flexibility. It starts with a three character prefix and then a sequence of three digits. Now, I know that I could change the prefix after every 1000 images, but I would much rather increase the length of the file names to allow for growth using the same prefix.


So let's say I have these files store a folder G:\pictures and the files are currently named img000.jpg to img999.jpg. I would like to have a script, Visual Basic or otherwise that would rename those files to img0000.jpg to img9999.jpg.


I know that Windows has its own administrative language, but I have not used it and I am not familiar with its capabilities. I have Visual Studio community addition.


Could somebody please point me in the right direction.

File renamer utility?

Is there a good file renamer utility that's safe to use anyone could recommend? I used to use Gizmo's list for app suggestions but this particular application has not been reviewed in several years, so I don't know if those apps are safe to use or not.

I have many files I need to rename but keep the individuality of the names. For instance, I need to rename all files in a particular folder from yyyy.mm.pdf to AMEXyyyy.mm.pdf keeping the yyyy.mm data unique. Another folder has a ton of files that need to be renamed from yyyy.mm.pdf to Visayyyy.mm.pdf.

I had all this figured out a month or so back but have already forgotten how I did it using an arcane script in either cmd prompt or powershell, I can't remember which. And now I'm drawing a blank how to do it. Again. smh. So I thought a nice freeware file renamer might help me out.

This issue may happen due to system file corruption. I suggest you to run System file checker. System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow
the below given steps:

• Press Windows key + X, select
  Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.
• In Command prompt type sfc/scannow and press enter.
• Restart the computer.

If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state, then I suggest you to try the following steps:

• Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting “Command prompt admin”.
• In command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

• Close the command prompt and restart the PC and check if it works.

Program data files not saving

I've just executed all of the above commands. No issues were detected with the scannow. None of the above steps have resolved my problem. Very perplexing what is causing the problem on the laptop but not on the desktop pc.
