Post 18, I haven't tried that yet I think I considered it to be a bit more tricky so decided to carry on the current route so I can still go that way if necessary.

I'm sorry, but I think I may have rebooted as I can't get to the EFI partition and I'm getting a bit 'lost'.*Redface

Please make sure that you take pictures using a camera or smart phone camera and post images into the thread before exiting (step #12).

    1) Open command prompt > Administrator X:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe > X:Sources> type:
    2) diskpart
    3) list disk
    4) list volume
(look for the EFI volume and identify the #)(The EFI partition should be the volume that displays FAT32 and hidden)
    5) select volume W (for W enter the volume number of the EFI partition)
    6) detail volume
    7) assign letter=b
(should see diskpart successfully assigned the drive letter or mount point.
    8) list volume
(confirm that the volume is properly labeled with the letter B)
    9) exit
(this should exit diskpart and open X:Sources>
    10) cd /d b:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\
    (It should display: b:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot>)
    11) bootrec /fixboot
(It should display: The operation completed successfully.)
    ren BCD BCD.bak
    (It should display: b:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot>
    12) bcdboot c:\Windows /L en-us /s b: /f ALL
(It should display: Boot files successfully created.)
    13) exit
    14) For choose an option click Turn off your PC)
    15) Power on to check the boot.

Please make sure that you take pictures using a camera or smart phone camera and post images into the thread before exiting (step#12).

OK, here we go. The first couple of pics are where I was trying to see where I was.

assign letter=b failed because (I think) because it was already assigned as B.

But then the backup failed and I can't see why.

The drive letter was supposed to be confirmed.
If it is labeled it cannot be labeled again.
    Continue with step #12
    Then reboot
    Report results into the thread.
If it works you are set.
Proceed to the reg backup if it fails.
If the reg backup fails there is 1 more method.

    I need a Windows 10 1709 repair disk!

So do I abort the reg backup or can I recover from my error? I am downloading the 64 bit iso now anyway.

I noticed that the disk geometry is all wrong on my hard drive, a number of the partitions are wrongly named but I assume this can be corrected when I have a working system using Admin Tools\Disk Management?
    Thanks

I just burnt Win14393PESE_x64 ISO v170116 but on booting my system it came up as what appears to be a normal Windows disk, offering all the usual options but nothing to indicate the layout on the webpage.

I can't see anything on it that will do anything different?

    Hi.
Just wanted to pop in and make a suggestion.
@zbook; what do you think about approaching it from another angle?
OP says he has a Macrium image. What about installing W10 fresh on an unallocated drive (delete all partitions during custom install) - let Windows create all the partitions, etc. needed. Then boot into Kyhi's recovery media, or Macrium media, and for a restore, grab the C partition ONLY in the backup image and drag it down over the new C partition to restore that? I know the procedure works - we've had several people do it here.

The only thing that would worry me is the state of the Macrium image. I would certainly verify it before I'd go taking my internal drive down to bare metal.

    Want to Point out
    the Diskpart version is 6.3.9600
which is the Windows 8.1 version
OP also has a 10gb Recovery image partition

    also has a windows folder
    a windows.old folder
    a windows10 upgrade folder

if OP has a macrium or acronis complete system image - I would suggest a restore to a clean disk

or just do a clean Installation of windows 10

would be most helpful if he could boot Win10PESE Media

    Download my ISO
    Mount ISO
Copy ISO contents to a FAT32 Formatted USB
Boot your problem PC from that USB Media....
That way you can SEE via explorer your files...

I also read your other this thread..
You have a WINDOWS folder and a Windows.old folder
the WINDOWS folder was created on March 18

Rename the "Windows" folder to "windows.sav"
    rename windows.old folder to windows

    then repair your BCD...

You would be best served by creating this rescue media......

@simrick that 's fine. Before the thread there were some failed restorations. bertie11 reported both acronis and macrium images and has already considered clean install. Kyhi has already started.

    I need a Windows 10 1709 repair disk!

I just spent 30 minutes typing out my current situation only for it to disappear with a message saying' the token has expired, press the back button and go back to the previous window'.

What does that mean, I will have to start all over again now?

I will have to post a quick reply as I'm not allowed to use 'Advanced' now.

I have now purchased another laptop so at least I will have something that will boot up (I really hope so!). This old laptop keeps locking up when overheating so i can't trust it. I have recovered most/all of my data from earlier Acronis images, folders and files, so I guess I am in a position to move forward with the faulty system.

First off, is it possible to recover from the blunder I made earlier in post #35 where I typed MD backup? If no, I am tempted to go for a clean install onto C:\ and then drag a suitable C:\ image from Reflect onto it and see what happens as Simrick suggests. I would have liked to have kept as much as I could rather than clean the whole disk in case I see anything I still need. What would happen if I just formatted C:\ rather than the whole disk?

Kyhi, I'm still not sure about using your disk as I have so much going on here that I just want a simple resolution and I suspect the new install of 10 onto C:\ might be simplest. If I remember how to do it!

My thanks to everyone helping me here.

Off Topic, One thing to check on your browser is some form of auto refresh add-on - this can cause the page to reset and lose a post
