i need help getting a recovery bitlocker code for my old hard drive from a computer that failed and locked the data. the Key ID: D817ffB8 the Dell pc serial number is 6SLPB63someone gave me one yesterday and it did not work. the hard drive failed, and I opened the back of the laptop not knowing about the Bitlocker. I need to copy the files off the hard drive but can't until I get the correct Bitlocker code.

Please follow the suggestions below and check if you are able to boot to your desktop.

• Places to look for your BitLocker key:
  • On a printout you saved. Look in places you keep important papers.
    
  • Saved on a USB flash drive. Plug the USB flash drive into your locked PC and follow the instructions. If you saved the key as a text file on the flash drive, use a different computer to read the text file.
  • In your Microsoft account. To get your recovery key, go to
    BitLocker Recovery Keys.

• Or ask someone for help:
  • Ask someone with administrator privileges on the same PC to unlock it with their key.
  • If your PC is connected to a domain (usually a work or school computer), ask a system administrator for your recovery key

Bitlocker Recovery Key Needed

I took my computer into to have it serviced, and it was found that I needed a new hard drive. However, when the new one was installed, the tech needed a Bitlocker recoverty key to transfer the data from the old, to the new, hard drive. I did not know that I had Bitlocker on my computer, and had never printed out a recovery key. I tried looking on my Microsoft account, and no Bitlocker key was listed for my computer. I checked with my two employers (the laptop is personal, but I use it for work as well), and neither of them had a Bitlocker recovery key to it either. What do I do now?

I suggest you to perform below mentioned steps to disable BitLocker.

To disable BitLocker I would suggest you try the following steps and see if it helps.

• 
  Press Windows key + X and click on
  Control Panel.
  
• 
  Change View by from Category
  to Large Icons/Small Icons.
  
• 
  Click on BitLocker Drive Encryption and click on
  Turn BitLocker Off.
  
• 
  Follow on screen instructions. Click on Decrypt the Drive
  when the message appears.
