Windows 10: i need help regarding formatting a GPT drive, im very confused.

I purchased a newused HDD, but I'm struggling to get it formatted for use. i don't yet believe the drive to be faulty.all my searches are just going round in circles.in disk management its showing up as "2048GB, healthy GPT protective partition" which is the first odd thing as I'd expect to see 1024GB, as its 1TB.right clicking gives all options except "help" as greyed out.right clicking on the disk 1 section on the left shows "convert to GPT" greyed out, even though it shows as a GPT drive in the main window. and under the drives properties/volumes, it shows its partition style as MBR.I'v

I've tried formatting via diskpart, but after selecting the correct partition and typing format, it states "there is no volume selected".

at this point I'm feeling i did something wrong when initializing the drive which confused it, as i did initially try to use MBR, but it seemed nothing happened, so then i used GPT. is it possible I've confused the drive into thinking it is both?

I'm now wondering if there's a function to reverse the initialization step and start again? is somebody able to advise the best way to resolve this confusion and get my drive in a usable state? as like i said, my searches are going in circles. happy to provide screen shots etc.

Disk drives are partitioned based on the BIOS settings if they are the Windows drive.

If they are not the Windows drive they can be GPT or MBR.

To view all of the drives on the computer open administrative command prompt and copy and paste: (one at a time or all at one time) (these are all diagnostic commands)

diskpart

lis dis

lis vol

sel dis 0

det dis

lis par

sel par 1

det par

sel par 2

det par

sel par 3

det par

sel par 4

det par

sel par 5

det par

sel dis 1

det dis

lis par

sel par 1

det par

sel par 2

det par

sel par 3

det par

sel par 4

det par

sel par 5

det par

exit (typing exit is not necessary but is the method to get out of the diskpart menu)

Type:

ctrl + a

ctrl + c

Paste the commands with results into this thread typing:

ctrl + v

Once you have identified the disk number for the drive to be initialized type:

diskpart

lis dis

sel dis # (replace # with the number of the disk)

clean

convert gpt

create partition primary

format quick fs=ntfs

assign

exit

Run CMD


1. diskpart
2. list disk

Then in the 3º step, put the correct number of disk in the list for the usb flash (if it's listed in disk 3, then you'll have to write select disk 3).

2. select disk #
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

with that commands you will format the flash drive in fat32, if you have a large drive you can select also "format fs=ntfs" in step 7.
