Windows 10: I need to store some files and save space in my external HDD at the same time so I was...

Files are - Images, Videos, Games, documents, etc.

What will be the best option of compression to save them offline for future?

I want to compress files/folders such that the size reduces by at least 50-70% with nothing getting lost or corrupted.

And please don't recommend anything related to cloud because I can't afford that rn. Also I want to save game files because I don't want to waste my internet by downloading them again.

PS - You can recommend both Windows and Linux ways?

Deleting windows.old and WINDOWS.TEMP from external HDD

I have a small laptop with a very limited amount of memory. I store my files - documents and photos - on an external hard disc drive, which I also use with a PC, so I can use files on both computers. I thought at first I couldn't install the Windows 10
upgrade on the laptop because of the lack of space, but then realised I could do it using the external HDD, which I accomplished successfully. However, these files were not automatically removed by Microsoft and I was left with a windows.old file folder and
a WINDOWS.TEMP on my external HDD. There is plenty of space on the external HDD, but these files are redundant and I would like to get rid of them. I tried disc cleanup, but it did not recognise the temporary folder at all, though I thought I had got rid of
windows.old. However, it still shows up on explorer, (though not in disc cleanup) but it is empty. The temporary folder is still there,containing windowsOld.wim, taking up a lot of space, and disc clean up simply does not recognise its existence. The Windows10upgrade
folder is on the laptop which runs independently of the external HDD. I chatted to microsoft and the agent directed me to storage in settings, but the external HDD does not appear there, because I only store things on it manually. If it's really difficult,
the files can stay where they are, but should it be so difficult to remove them from an external HDD? Any suggestions?

Thank you for helping me out.

Device manager sees the external hdd and reports it is working normally.

But, when i go windows explorer it does not read.

That hdd contains w vista and i am trying to save and archive older files.

What do you suggest?

External HDD or Internal HDD?

I'm contemplating whether or not if I should purchase a external hard drive for saving all of my work, music, photo's backup etc, instead of saving it on my pc hd. Now the problem is external hdd vs internal hdd's longevity, hardware differences, file corruption typically on external hdd's or flash drives. Is it a mistake saving personal stuff separate from the pc or are ex hdd as good as internal? I've had experiences loosing my stuff because of viruses, hdd failure and lack of prior experience not partitioning my hdd *Smile
