I am traveling and need to connect to my pc with my MacBook. How can I get connected? It doesn't make sense to me that they would have to be on the same network. What would be the use in that?

    Remote Desktop through different network

    Hello,

I'm trying to use Microsoft RD to connect to my home PC remotely.

It all works when making a connection on the same network, but when I try to connect from a different network I always some sort of an error message.

I'll mention that I CAN connect remotely using the Chrome Remote Desktop.

On the PC I'm trying to connect to, I have:

    • purchased Windows 11 Professional
    • downloaded RD client from the Microsoft store
    • enabled remote connection in Settings (Settings->System->Remote Desktop->Enable, then added my email address under Remote Desktop users)
    • In the firewall settings, I enabled Remote Desktop, both on private and public networks
    • set up port forwarding from port 3389 to my local IP address (screenshot attached, I may have done something wrong...)

I need to use the remote desktop with a different wifi network. How do I do that? 4e5b4bc3-188f-40c9-8ca1-1e1b73caa355?upload=true.png

I have tried to connect by 3 different ways:

    1. Microsoft Remote Desktop (Apple Store app) on my Mac
    2. Microsoft Remote Desktop (Microsoft Store app) on another PC
    3. Remote Desktop Connection (built-in app on PCs) on another PC
    • In attempt 1, I tried in two ways:

Writing down in "PC name" the public IP - I get error message 0x204: "We couldn't connect to the remote PC. Make sure the PC is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled."

OR Writing down in "PC name" the local IP, and writing the public IP under gateway - I get error message 0x300005f: "An error occurred while communicating with the Remote Desktop Gateway. If this keeps happening, contact your network administrator for assistance".
    • In attempt 2, I tried in two ways:

Writing down in "PC name" the public IP - I get error message 0x516: "You have been disconnected because another connection was made to the remote PC",

OR Writing down in "PC name" the local IP, and writing the public IP under gateway - I get error message 0x50331743: "Something went wrong when we tried to connect. If this keeps happening, ask your admin or tech support for help".
    • In attempt 3, I get the following error message (don't see any number):

"Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

      1) Renote access to the server is not enabled

      2) The remote computer is turned off

      3) The remote computer is not available on the network

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled
I would really appreciate if someone could help me with this issue, as I have been trying to find out the reason for it for over a year and still don't know what the problem is.

    Thank you very much.

Remote Desktop Connection using different networks

    Hi Baskar,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are trying to use remote connection from different network to connect your work PC. We will help you.

You can connect to a work PC from another work PC or your home PC. Only one person at a time can sign in to a PC. If someone else is using the work PC, you'll automatically sign them out if you sign in. Also, Windows Firewall will automatically open the
required port when you start a remote connection. If you're using another firewall, make sure the port for Remote Desktop (usually 3389) is open.

I suggest you to refer the below links and check if it helps you connecting your devices to remote connections.

Refer: How to use Remote Desktop

With Remote Desktop Connection, you can sit at a PC and connect to another PC in a different location (the remote PC). For example, you can sit at your home PC and connect to your work PC, and use all of your apps, files, and network resources as if you
were sitting right in front of your work PC.

Refer: Remote Desktop Connection: frequently asked questions -
Steps applies to Windows 10 as well.

Hope this information helps. Keep us posted to help you better.
