Windows 10: I received a “Bad System Config.”

I received a “Bad System Config.” blue screen on my windows 11 device. I tried shutting down the device 2-3 times as instructed, but now it has been stuck on “preparing automatic repairs” for the whole night. How long does this normally take? What do I do from then moving forward?

The error Bad System Config means that something is wrong with the registry on your PC and you'll need to return to a previous configuration. It would be great, if you can help us with the details requested below:

• When do you get the error message?
  
• Does the computer boot to the Desktop?
  
• What is the make and model of the computer?
  
• Are you aware of any changes made to the computer recently?

Note: The last step in the above article talks about performing a reset on the computer. Resetting the computer will delete all the files and applications from the computer. Do not perform reset on your computer.

Got it. In that case switch to the WinRE Repair Mode or bootable media provided in this tutorial which includes everything possible to get Windows started, up to if necessary replacing the User account in order to save the install, doing an automated Reset, or the gold standard Clean Install:

If you have files that aren't backed up then there is a step to rescue them first. using the Command Prompt in WinRE or bootable media:

2. Are you aware of any changes made to the PC prior to which you weren’t facing this issue?
   
3. When do you receive this error?
   
4. What is the complete error message you receive?
   
5. Are you able to boot the PC to desktop?
