After a recent Windows update, it seems like I've lost access to a partition on my external hard drive. This partition stored important files like work documents and personal photos. I'm worried about recovering it and accessing my data again. My computer runs on Windows. I've tried checking disk management and reconnecting the hard drive, but nothing's working. Any help on recovering the lost partition would be really appreciated. Thanks!

    :)

  2. external hard drive

    Hi Chrpee,

If you can't find external hard drive on Disk management than the next step is using the diskpart via command line, please follow the steps below:-

On the keyboard hit ((Windows logo key + R key)) than type ((CMD))

Now the windows command line will appear, the next steps is to type ((diskpart))

After that type ((list disk)) to show you the list of hard disks with partitions

If you found your external hard drive one of the list than you need to type ((select disk number)), note: the number is a disk number

Once you selected the hard disk or partitions than type ((clean))

    than type ((create partition primary))

    than type ((select partition 1))

    than type ((active))

    than type ((format fs=ntfs quick))

    than type ((assign))

    last type ((exit))

Check if the external hard drive appeared, if not please see the link below for more info and let me know if you need any assist

    W7 Hard drive partition issue

to get rid of that 100 meg windows partition that setup creates for you on a new install on a blank hdd:

    - press shift+f10 when on the partition management screen in setup <-- this opens a command prompt
    - diskpart <-- start the windows command line partition management tool
    - list disk <--- list the installed hdds in this computer for the next step
    - select disk 0 <- might have to replace 0 with the number of the correct disk
    - clean <-- this will erase all data on the disk you selected one step up- dont use the wrong disk!
    - create partition primary <- creates a primary partition taking up all space on the drive, adjust the command if necessary
    - exit, exit to exit diskpart and the command prompt
    - click refresh in partition manager and select your newly created partition and install to that

Windows 10 update lost external hard drive

    Hi,

Incompatible/outdated USB drivers may be one of the possible reasons your external hard drive is no longer recognized by your recently updated Windows 10 PC. To better assist you and provide you with the appropriate resolution, we would like to know a few more
information. Kindly answer the questions below:

    • What is the current version/build of your Windows 10 PC? To check, type
      winver
on Cortana's search field and press Enter.
    • Are there any available updates for your USB drivers?
    • Have you tried connecting your external hard drive to a different USB port on the same computer?

In the meantime, you may try to run the hardware troubleshooter and see if the issue persists. Here are the steps:

    • Type troubleshooting in the search box.
    • Select view all on the top left pane.
    • Click on Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter and follow the prompts to run the troubleshooter.

We're looking forward for your response.
