  1. I Think Installing Drivers Out of Order Resulted in a Black Screen with Cursor

    Hello.

I built my pc last night and this morning installed Windows 10 Pro via USB. I was able to install a few applications Steam and Discord and browse the internet normally.

This afternoon, I decided I should update the drivers on my motherboard since that's a thing I've heard tech people say to do. I went to the website of my motherboard's manufacturer and found the drivers page for my specific motherboard. I installed a chipset driver update and when it requested a restart I did so. Upon logging back into Windows, all I could see is a black screen with my mouse cursor. Using the Control-Alt-Delete combo I was able to open task manager and ask an internet friend for advice. He thought it was the graphics card but I suspect it was the update to the motherboard chipset. We tried several easy fixes that none of them worked. At least with Task Manager I was able to access a web browser to ask this question. What should I do? Is there a way to fix this from the state my computer is in? Will I need to re-install Windows? Or will I need to somehow reset the motherboard?

    Here are my relevant specs:

OS: Windows 10 Pro - 64 bit version

Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX 8450-F Gaming Motherboard

GPU: Gigabyte Geforce RTX 20660 using Nvidia

    :)

Installation black screen on reboot, no cursor

Hi, there's a huge amount of material on this if you search for 'Windows 10 boot to black screen' e.g.
Problem: After installation Windows 10 boot into black screen with cursor!

    Possible causes include:
    - problem with display driver (including needing to use an earlier version e.g. AMD Catalyst)
    - having an installed program (in Win 7) that conflicts with the upgrade
    - the 'two monitor/display' scenario described in the above

I'd suggest doing a bit of research and describing what you've tried of the various solutions and approaches widely documented.

My first attempt to upgrade failed with somewhat similar symptoms- this was because I had a certain program installed.
Note that some recommend uninstalling your AV before upgrading.

Hopefully you made a disk image of your Win 7 before starting the upgrade. Good luck
