  1. I think my Dad was getting scammed

I spoke to my Dad today and he told me that he was on his laptop and something went wrong, he got locked out or something, and then he got a message from someone claiming to be Microsoft and saying that they think he got connected to something on the Dark Web. They were trying to "help" him and asked for the last four of his Social and then asked for his password. So I am 99.9999% sure this is a scam as I don't think Microsoft waits online to see if someone is having problems and they won't ask for personal information, especially not a password. I just wanted to get some confirmation as I tol

  2. Was my dad scammed?

my dad turned his computer on and a popup saying the computer was locked/frozen kept popping up. It had only 1 number to call to have it fixed. it was a non microsoft number/message. The alleged company was called NovaTech. My dad called the number and it was a guy with an indain accent who answered and told him he could pay $600 to fix the computer and an additional $1000 for internet security. I know this is a scam because there was only that one number to call and it kept popping up. Is this a new scam? How could my dad have fixed the computer without calling the number? I believe he has McAffee anti-virus and it did nothing to protect the computer.

  3. Was my dad scammed?

    Hi Jonny,

My name is Igor, it's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you.

    Yes, this is a scam.

Your dad may use some off-line tool for computer scanning such as Kaspersky Rescue Disk. A clean computer should be used for this media creation.

  4. I think my Dad was getting scammed

ZEUS Virus phone tech support scam got my Dad today. Are we okay?

So earlier today my Dad opened a link on Facebook, which then prompted him with the "ALERT Zeus Virus. Contact Microsoft support now" etc. He called the number listed (which was a 1-877 number) and was prompted to input a pin so that the technician could
remotely access his laptop. The technician continued to explain that his anti-virus software wasn't good enough and that he should buy their line of products for 299$. My Dad started to get freaked out when the guy was controlling the computer so he hung up
and turned the computer off. Now, I have a few questions to ask.

    1. Is the laptop that he accessed now compromised? He pointed out the IP address to my Dad (no idea why) and that's a little scary to me. Since the shutdown, I've rebooted it and put it in Airplane mode just in case. Is the computer safe or should we take
it in to get looked at?

    2. Are other computers in our household compromised? We all run on the same network so I'm worried that the scam artist now has access to all of our devices.

    3. What's the next step? Should we download an anti-virus program that can scan for this sort of thing? Sorry, just kind of new to this stuff as I've never fallen for one of these scams before. I feel bad for my Dad as he had no idea. He barely ever uses
computers and it seemed legit to him with all of the Microsoft logos on the screen.

The guy seemed to want him to buy their product. He didn't get access to any files (I don't believe but I'll double check) and he never got my Dad to download any programs or anything. So I hope we're okay. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll
answer any more questions you may have!

Sorry for the long post I just want to get this figured out as soon as possible.
