Windows 10: I tried to change my username on windows 10, but I think I messed up

My username in files would show up as my old email, so I googled if I could change it. The first result gave me instructions to change it by typing win+R netplwiz and then going into properties from there. I changed both the username, and the full name.

But after I did that, new files still showed the old name. When I went back to check that the changes had applied properly, there was no users listed and pressing "Add" doesn't do anything. What did I do, and can I fix it?


I'm sorry if I chose the wrong topic on this question, I wasn't sure if it should be personalization or settings.

Are you logged in with the Microsoft account or a local account?

You can follow the steps below to change the username and check if it helps.

• Press Windows key + X key.
• Click on Control Panel.
• Under view, select large icons.
• Go to User Account.
• Click on Manage another account.
• Select the User Account for which you want to select the password.
• Click on Change the username.
• Click on Change Name button.
