  1. I use an external mechanical keyboard with my laptop on a regular basis. Would this affect...

I purchased an external mechanical keyboard to use with my new laptop, so as to prevent early damage to laptop keys and touchpad, and ensure that they last longer throughout the laptop's life. I've decided to use them at home 80% of the time while engaging the built-ins when carrying my device to the college 20% of the time. I've been told many times that internal laptop keyboard repairs / replacements are very costly compared to the cost of purchasing an external set, so I bought an inexpensive yet popular combo from Dell. But I worry if this would affect my laptop's battery life.

    :)

  2. I use an external keyboard and a mouse with my laptop on a regular basis. Would this affect my battery?

I purchased an external keyboard and mouse to use with my new laptop, so as to prevent early damage to laptop keys and touchpad, and ensure that they last longer throughout the laptop's life. I've decided to use them at home (80% of the time) while engaging
the built-ins when carrying my device to the college (20% of the time). I've been told many times that internal laptop keyboard repairs / replacements are very costly compared to the cost of purchasing an external set, so I bought an inexpensive yet popular
combo from Dell. But I worry if this would affect my laptop's battery life.

Thus my question is, should I disconnect the keyboard and mouse when not in use, and connect them every time? I read a bit about USB Selective Suspend and have it enabled, although it is still unclear if it really saves your battery with external keyboards,
and also the interval after which it engages this (or the deciding factor which engages this) and suspends the USB device. Also, how should I wake up the device, if it actually enters a suspended state? Does it happen automatically, or do I have to do it manually
    (by ex. reconnecting the plug)?

A detailed explanation would be helpful. Please help. Thanks in advance.

  3. I use an external keyboard and a mouse with my laptop on a regular basis. Would this affect my battery?

    Hi Shubham,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

We appreciate your interest in Windows 10. I will be glad to answer your query.

I'd like to inform you that using an external keyboard and mouse does not differ from the amount of battery used when you use the inbuilt keyboard. Using an external keyboard and mouse does not affect your battery's life. It will consume the same amount
of battery it would when you use the inbuilt keyboard and mice.

It is also not necessary that you disconnect the external devices to save the battery. I would rather advice you to put your computer to sleep when not in use, to reduce power consumption.

    Hope this answers your query.

Do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to help.
