The why: Portability and compatibility.I have a work related program that runs on this drive and that particular software only runs on Win XP. Updating the software isn’t preferable as it would cause a host of incompatibility issues in other areas of the business. I know i’s dumb and we should migrate but I guess it’s not in their list of priorities. The materials: The XP machine is an old Dell desktop. The machine I want to transfer to is an old MacBook Pro that’s not in use and could potentially come in handy here using bootcamp but I just don’t have the knowledge to say for certain but I h

  2. Installing Windows XP on modern machine?

Guys, if you really want to install Windows XP on your modern PC (PCs preinstalled Windows 10/8.1), you can...But since Microsoft dropped support 5 years ago, it's better not to install it. You can do this at your own risk.

If you really want XP on modern PC, then better perform a clean installation. But I recommend you to use a virtual machine to run Windows XP within your primary OS. Virtualization is a freeware, like Virtualbox, VMware, and Microsoft Virtual PC.

If you prefer dual boot your later versions of Windows with Windows XP (or Windows 9x), then all you have to do:

Install an older version of Windows first. Then after, you can install later versions.

If you're a Windows 10 user, trying to dual boot with Windows XP, i'll tell you:

In Windows XP, IE6 is the default Internet Explorer version for Windows XP. You need IE8 (IE8 is the latest version of IE to run on Windows XP.). But since IE6 cannot access most of the websites, better download IE8 installer using IE11 or MS Edge on Windows
    10. Then you can install IE8 using Windows XP by accessing a Windows 10 drive.

But instead of dual boot, I recommend you again to use a virtual machine. OK?

  3. Windows 7 booting off wrong drive?!?!?

Please move if this is in the wrong place.

I have two hard drives, a 1.5TB drive, and a 160GB drive. Windows is installed on the 1.5TB drive, as are all my files and programs. The 160GB drive has a bunch of old files, and apparently the bootmgr and boot folder. Nothing else is on the 160GB drive, other than media files etc.

If I remove the 160GB drive from the machine, windows refuses to boot, plug it back in, it works fine. The setup with two hard drives I have now is temporary, as the 160GB drive will go into another machine.

My question is, can someone give me a step by step on how to make windows force to boot off the 1.5TB drive, ignoring the 160GB drive in the boot process completely?
I don't know how to do this in Windows 7, on XP I would just run the /fixmbr command and its related ones.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Note: I would really really rather not have to wipe and reinstall, I know it can be done without one as I've had this issue with XP before.

Cloned WIN10/64 Boot drive will not Boot! Boot volume stays OFFLINE

Rather than using the Macrium Reflect cloning process, I have had better success with this method:

    1. Create an image of the old disk. Park it on an external disk.
    2. Create a Macrium Reflect USB rescue disk.
    3. Disconnect the old disk, connect the new disk.
    4. Boot the machine with the USB rescue disk.
    5. Restore the image onto the new disk.
    6. Boot the machine with only the new disk connected.
