Windows 10: I want to transfer my retail Windows 10 pro licence from my old PC to a new one.

I've already uninstalled the key from my previous PC. But I can't use the same key on a new computer. I thought retail keys were transferable? I tried using the troubleshooter but it didn't find any solutions.

You will need your Windows 8 Pro licence (at least) however as it was an upgrade from Windows 7 it may not have transfer right, even though it shows retail.

The first thing to do is on the new PC run the activation troublehsooter to see if it will allow the licence to be transferred from the old device to the new one.

If not you will need to contact support to see if they will allow a one time transfer.

It depends on the type of Windows 10 licence(s) you have, did the Windows 10 Pro come pre-installed on the other PC (OEM licence) or was that purchased separately to the PC (Retail licence)?

A Retail licence does have transfer rights to another motherboard or PC, an OEM licence is locked to the initial motherboard it is activated on . ..

Do you just want to move the Pro licence to the new PC, or is your intention to swap those licences around, if that is the case, is the new Windows 10 Home licence and OEM licence?

Since you have a Retail Windows 8 Pro licence upgraded to Windows 10, that will have transfer rights to a new PC

Will the new PC have Windows 10 Home pre-installed or will that be have no operating system pre-installed?

If that new PC will not have an operating system installed,then you can download and create Windows 10 bootable USB form the link below and clean install Windows 10, skip the steps to insert a Product key, then if Windows 10 Pro does not activate automatically,
when you log into your Microsoft Account, run the Activation Troubleshooter form the Settings App

If that new PC will have Windows 10 Home pre-installed,your best option is to contact Microsoft Support and ask them to help you to transfer that Pro licence to your new PC:
