    This was the original question.

I recently got a new SSD to compliment my old HDD. I decided to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on the SSD while leaving the old HDD operating upgraded Win10 system intact, with the idea that I could boot into the old OS to use any programs that I couldn't easily reinstall or that I didn't want to take up space on the new drive because I rarely use them. I would also use the HDD to store all of the data, e.g. pictures, documents, etc. at this point all of my data is still on it anyway....

    The answer was below.

    • Hi Keith,

The error message that you're getting likely occurs if you don't have a permission to access system files or if there's a conflict between multiple files on your system. These access permissions restrict unauthorized users and external resources from accessing system files and folders. To troubleshoot your issue with opening documents, we suggest setting the permission of your hard drive to full control. To do so. here's how:

My follow up question is concerning this image which appears to from a newly installed system.

      https://filestore.community.support.microsoft.com/api/images/0217871d-d4e7-440d-81c5-4237c6a1e1c4

The instructions are perfect and I totally agree, it worked for me.

My question is, unlike the example above, I have other Principals and Group or User names here.

      https://filestore.community.support.microsoft.com/api/images/17f2d1fe-955c-4516-96f8-ab1eeccd16fb

These are from other Windows installs I have had these external USB hard drives connected to. Same had the same system name, others did not. Some are long names like 's-...'.

      1. Is it a best practice to delete the other Principals and Group or User names after I add 'Everyone' from these three places:

      a Permissions for drive.

      b Advanced Security Settings Permissions.

      c Advanced Security Settings Auditing.

    2. Does the check box for "Replace all child object auditing entries..." ever get checked?

I have using some of these drives for 6 years and gone through many variation of this process for up to 8 drives after every clean install. I want to fine the settings that will prevent this from happening again. I am part of a private network.

Sometimes my process corrupts the recycle bin for a particular drive.

    Thanks,

    Chris Lively

    Hi Jon,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are willing to change Security question and answer. I will certainly help you.

Follow below steps to add security question and answer to Microsoft account:

    Add security info

    2. Under Security info helps keep your account secure, choose
    Add security info.

    3. Follow the instructions to enter your email or phone number, then press
    Next.

    4. We’ll send a security code to that new email or phone number. Enter that security code, and press
    Next again.

Your new security info will appear in your list.

    Remove security info

    1. Go to the Security settings page, and sign in with your Microsoft account.

    2. If you’re asked to enter a security code to continue but you can't use your security info, choose
    I don't have any

of these or I can't verify my account from the drop-down list, then follow the instructions to reset your security

    info.

    3. In the Security settings page you’ll see your security info under Security info helps keep your account secure.

Choose Remove for any you want to remove. You may be asked to add new security info before you can remove

    the old info.

Note: If you remove all of your security info, there’s a 30-day wait during which we help protect sensitive parts of your account so nobody can change your security settings or use your payment options. During this period you can still use
your email, Skype, OneDrive, and devices as usual. After the 30 days, you’ll be notified that the wait is over and it’s time to enter new security info.

Refer below link to change the password:

  3. Protocol for answering questions posted.

There are lots of very competent volunteers like me here. Your best bet is to ask your question as clearly and completely as possible and add a full description of your system. Please do not use all CAPITAL letters. I will not even look at those.
Here are some of the system factors that I find particularly useful if you will provide them along with your question. Realize that since we cannot be actually present at your system, we need framework and context.

    1. Laptop or Desktop
    2. Age of computer
    3. make/model
    4. Operating system installed (e.g. Windows 7)
    5. 32 or 64 bit? (Right-click on Computer, choose Properties)
    6. Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed? Same place as 5 above.
    7. Capacity of disk drive, how much is in use? Pie chart shown in Computer
    8. Model number of hard drive (click Disk in Device Manager)
    9. Age of hard drive if not the original
    10. How much memory is installed? (Right-click on Computer, choose Properties)
    11. Please list ALL installed programs.....
    12. Security software installed?
    13. Speed of Internet service you are using (www.speedtest.net )

I waould like ask a queston about answer to a questions already posted about had drive security

    Answer to question

    You've posted 5 questions:

    1. On January 15, you posted "Word 2013 document too large in windows10"; Stefan Blom replied on January 16 and you marked his reply as the answer to your question
    2. On January 18, you posted "Word documents sent to cloud"; there have been 11 replies to that question and on January 19, you marked Jay Freedman's reply as the answer and replied "Got it! Thanks!"
    3. On February 6, you posted "Windows 7 updates"; I replied on Feb 6 and you replied "Ok, thanks!"
    4. On March 31, you posted "Windows 7 updates" which is essentially identical to the question you posted on February 6. It appears that user PINGROSHEKKA replied to your post but that reply was split into its own separate thread by a Volunteer Moderator because
rather than being a reply to you, user PINGROSHEKKA asked an unrelated question.
    5. Finally, today you posted "Answer to question"; Frederik Long has replied twice.

I would be glad to clarify my February 6 reply to your question if you explain your confusion. If you've received new updates on your Windows 7 computer since February 6, open Windows Update, click the link for "View update history" and list the updates
    you're confused about.

The following, for example, are the updates I've received since February 6 on a Windows 7 system. Although it looks like a lot of updates, they are, in fact, the very updates listed in my February 6 reply:

    • "signature" updates for Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender; in the list below, these are the different "versions" of KB915597
    • for another Microsoft product installed on your computer, such as Microsoft Office 2016;
in the list below, these are
      • the February and March versions of the "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool" KB 890830
      • update for Microsoft Word 2016
      • update for Microsoft Office 2016
      • update for Microsoft Skype for Business 2016
      • update for Microsoft Outlook 2016
      • update for Microsoft Excel 2016
