I was running the disc cleanup and I pressed checked the clean downloads folder and it deleted everything in my downloads folder. I think I only but app setups and random stuff I downloaded in there but I'm worried I downloaded something important there. Is the download folder just a bunch of leftover junk I downloaded or are there important files that I accidentally deleted.

Disk cleanup don't cleans Windows Update Cleanup.

Hi Himanshu,

Just to verify, are you running the Disk Cleanup as administrator? Windows Update Cleanup will only run with administrator rights, so be sure to check on that if you haven't.

UPDATE:

We tried to simulate the issue that you are having and have figured out a way on how to manually clean it up. Here are the steps:

• Type Services.msc on the Cortana search bar.
  
• Scroll down to Windows Update, right click and select Stop.
• Launch the File Explorer.
• Go to This PC > Local Disc (C > Windows
  > SoftwareDistribution.
• Rename SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution_1.
• Restart your PC.

Once booted up, go back to the Windows folder. You will notice that there will be two Software Distribution folder. Delete the
SoftwareDistribution_1 folder. This will let you clear out the Update Folder.

You should run Disk Cleanup Twice as explained below to safely remove anything that can be removed and check everything in the list, it is quite safe to do that, disk Cleanup will not suggest anything that is not safe to remove . . .

Open File Explorer

Click on your hard drive

On the Manage Tab, click Cleanup

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

Start Disk Cleanup again

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

This time in the resulting dialog, click 'Cleanup System Files'

Let Disk Cleanup run another scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

 

WindowsApps Folder Cleanup
