• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

How to fix: Windows 10 - Adobe .dng files consistently crash File Explorer?

If you have the File Explorer set to display thumbnails Adobe .dng files will cause the Windows 10 File Explorer to crash.
Always (in my experience).

If you are unfortunate enough to have a .dng file on your desktop, or in a folder on your desktop, Explorer gets stuck in a crash - re-start loop rendering your machine unusable.

The only solution I have found is to check the Folder Options -> 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'

However, this solution is a usability nightmare as doing so means that
you cannot view . jpg or other image files in File Explorer, which has the knock-on effect of making it almost impossible to upload image files as you cannot see the images to select the files to upload.

A search of the Internet shows that this error has been present in Windows since at least September 2009 (source: dpreview.com)

Question: How can we get Microsoft to address this fundamental error - which has been ignored for at least seven years?

Temporary Workaround Details: If you can get File explorer to stay open on a folder that doesn't contain a .dng file you can reset the Folder Options.

• Click on File -> Options
• Select the [View] tab
• Check the 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' checkbox
• Click on [Apply to Folders]
• Click on [OK]

 

How do I view DNG files in Windows 10 Explorer?

A DNG file is also known as Digital Negative Raw Image file. The easiest way to open a DNG file is to double-click on it and PC decide which default app or application is compatible to open the file. Most probably you may require Adobe Photoshop for
accessing these kind of file formats. If you have installed one, then PC by default suggest and redirects you to use the same application for opening the file.

Moreover, you can search Windows Store for an app that supports and open the DNG file.
